I bought the #3 Bill Adam Toshiba car from Bruce Tittle. Bruce seems to be a very nice guy who has kept this car for DEs. He has decided to build another 951 that he can drive to the track. He said he got tried of trailering it.

I know that car quite well. Very, very quick and reliable during the Rothmans Series.
Got a funny story to tell you about that car during a Mosport Race. Call or e-mail me @ work so I can tell you.

Hey, congrats on getting what many of us consider to be the best driving, best value in Porsche factory race cars. There are a number of us who are putting together a library of information on the Rothmans Porsche Cup, which was run in Canada in two guises:
The first was run in 1986/87 with normally-aspirated 944s. Spenard, Bye, Heimrath, Adam, Tracy and a slew of other great drivers ran in the race. I have a season recap video showing some hair-raising antics. This series was quite successful, so Porsche decided to up the stakes for 1988/89 by going to the Turbo Cup specification.
Both the Rothmans Cup and Turbo Cup cars are wise investments, IMHO. As 944s they are rather under-valued comparted to their 911 bretheren. As someone said, cars with more history, driven by a top driver, are more valuable than others. Many of the cars -- especially the n/a 86/87 cars -- were turned back into street cars, with correspondingly high mileage.
I mentioned that a few Rothmans Cup enthusiasts are gathering information, including the development of an unofficial "registry" of these cars, which we feel are an important part of Porsche history, especially here in North America. It could be argued that this series was the precursor to the wildy successful Porsche Pirelli (etc) Cup, which shows the influence of a few wily Canucks!
If you have a Rothmans Cup or Turbo Cup car, please contact me via email <karl@compass360.com> and we will add you to our list, which at the moment includes about 17 cars. There really aren't that many left!
Again, congratulations on a fine purchase!

Karl Thompson, Can I get a copy of the NA 944 cup series you spoke of? Also, there's a 944 turbo for sale here locally that has a number of deletions including undercoating. Do you know the VIN's of the 33 Rothman's turbo Cup cars? I can check it for a match. I can't imagine why a street car would ever have the undercoating deleted....Let me know.

I have a book that has the VIN#s. It is the Complete 944 Book by Peter Morgan. If you would like to email me the VIN, I can look it up for you.

Here is a pic of a couple of cars we ran a while back. while the 944T was not a original Cup car as the 964 is, it was still competitive, ITE champ, and offered a great change up when both were at the track.

Geta looking cars. Is the 911 Cup still basicaly stock or have you modified it. I was curious which one was faster.
My US Cup is bone stock. Although it is quicker than most Turbos and Turbo S 944, I was beaten last year by a 944 Cup. It would pull me down the straights.

Jim,
The cup car is stock from the series, but it is running the race computer. I am told that these are worth a few more hp over the stock unit which the car came with. I guess after 93 the series were going to the 993s and some lucky or devious competitors landed the race ECUs. The reasoning was that noone could reprogram the ECU between races but the teams needed the stock box to get the car around garages and in trailers and the sort. I have at different times run dbl adj. JRZs on the car for the old Speedvision and Motorola cup series, it was nice to have the adjustability if you know what you're trying to accomplish. It is surprising to see how many people at the track have these setups and do not even know how they work or where they are set!! we have a 3.6 RS tail and glass and steel doors and all three hoods (aluminum, steel, and glass)
the car was originally driven by Harald Grohs to 2nd in the German cup series and is featured quite a bit in Porsche Sport 93 & 94.
The Cup car was definitely faster than the 944T even when we had the waste gate blocked but then the 944t outweighed the Cupcar by several hundred lbs. both were great to drive (as you will find out I'm sure) it just depends on what style of driving you enjoy. Trailbraking was ALOT more fun in the Cup and driving the turbo in the rain was a bitch!
Enjoy both your cars, a friend of mine has one of the Escort 944S2, but garages it to much.
have a great year!
