Post Last POC Race of the season

Well, It didn't look good when we arrived friday afternoon, it was raining and the track was wet. The sky didn't look like it was going to give a break. But, saturday morning rolled around and thanks to many POC members for driving their tow vehicles and cars around the track...... for countless laps to dry the track, we got to race...pretty much un-interupted for the remainder of the weekend.

During sessions on staurday, there was a bad accident in turn 1. A car spun out, rolled backward thru traffic and was hit broadside prety hard. Both drivers seemd to stay in the car forever and the car that spun burst into flames. Both drivers were finally taken away and the track was cleared. It was a very bad accident, hate to see it.

Our car was not as fast as it was last time out. The track was cold, but not that cold. We added headers and a shorter fifth gear but our times were down. I blame it on tuning, we didn't get the car to the dyno to tune it after making changes and we were probably down about 10-15hp..oh well it was still fun.

We ended up qualifying 10th for the CUP race and finished 9th overall. So we picked up a position. Not as good as we expected but we have a little time now to sort the car for next season. A few Touring Car events and some more tweeking will help get us ready.

Neal Wright was pitting with us and was a great help by letting us use his 17" wheels. This allowed us to run 275s on all corners, big step up in handling. Neal also drove our car and ran a :36, and based on our times all weekend with the car, thats pretty good for the first time out in a different car. Neal really knows how to drive and it was nice to get feedback from him. Tim milked that car for everything it was worth all weekend long. I was watching the in car footage and saw Tim slinging that car around and all I have to say is...Tim, I wanna buy you a drink, you did outstanding work!

We left our car at Willow Springs locked up in Neal Wrights trailer and will be back their this friday to run the Pantera Club (or is it Touring Car??) this coming weekend. I think with Neal's help with some suspension work we should get the car hooking up pretty good. Neal will also give us more valuable feedback on the cars performance.

These were the results from the Cup Race:

1-Kevin Roush, 73RSR
2-Steve Alarcon,80 911SC
3-Don Dicker, 99 996
4-Scott Brink,84 911
5-Greg Smith, 77 911
6-Richard buckton, 70 911S
7-Michael Kaidbey, 73 911
8-Ross Clardy, 86 911C
**9-Tim Comeau, 84 944**
10-Mike Mansalve, 86 944T
11-Martin Jansen, 74 914/6
12-Jim Richmond, 86 944T
13-Walter Airth, 71 911
14-Jerry Roche, 82 911 SC
15-Guenter Lennarz, 83 911SC
16-Pete Yousko, 86 944T
17-Steve Gerken, 93 RS America
18-Garey Raymond, 76 914

Well, thats it...We had a blast and look forward to next season!!!!!!

The weekend did turn out well considering how Friday afternoon looked and all the clouds on Saturday. It was an odd weekend for lap times. Some guys turned their fastest times and others were about usual. I know tire temps were an issue on Fri and Saturday, it was really tough getting proper temps and having to play with pressures to get optimum results.

In the orange race on Sunday it might have been more interesting if Ross hadn't spun on the 1st lap causing the large gap between Kevin and Steve and the rest of the pack.

As for the red qualifying race on Saturday and the accident, Joe and Warren are OK. Warren was discharged on Sat. evening and went home, a little bruised and battered . Joe came back to the track on Sunday with a cast as a result of a leg fracture. There's a reason why POC and good car builders push the safety issue.

Nice to hear they are both ok. I was at Club DI sat night and someone said Joe was having dinner in the rest, and he seemed ok, casted and bruised, but doing well...

It was like watching a slow motion movie, when it happened...nothing anyone could do, and you just knew it was coming...and the worst place too.

<img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" /> to a speedy recovery!

Craig,

Yep, Kunz and Chang. Joe was driving Gary Becker's car, it was a mess. Warren's car(996 Cup car) caught fire when the oil tank, or line ruptured and it seemed as though it took 45-60 seconds for him to exit after the car burst into flames.
I heard rumor that the sub belt snapped allowing Joe to slide forward, injuring his leg, tibia, I believe.

Congratulations on a successful weekend folks. I'm glad to hear that Joe Kunz and Warren Chang are both alright. Was that Gary's Ferrari and if it was, how's the car doing? And how much does it cost to repair a Cup car????
This coming weekend is Touring Car and not Pantera Club. A great group of guys as Mitch has undoubtedly told you. Though I personally won't be there, watch out for our #24 Honda CRX driven by Don Mock.
It's an SCCA ITA/NASA PS2 car which means stock engine (all 1.6 Liters), but just set a new class lap record at 1:35:7 on year old Toyo tires.

By the way, can somebody fill me in on the story behind "Joe Kunz Racing" spray painted on the side of that mobile home just outside the gates? I can only imagine the pranksters behind this.

Regards,
David

Hey David,

Unfortunately it wasn't the Ferrari. It was Harry Raney's former car that Gary bought. (finally got both those boys in real cars). Fortunately, Loren had built that car for Harry with emphasis on safety and sacrificing some weight. Good call.

As for "Kunz Racing Headquarters", I believe that surfaced after a "Cantina Visit". No one knows nuthin'!

What's happened to the POC web site? It seems dead.

Maybe they were working on it, but it seems fine now. I just cruised around a little.

Whoaaaa You’re brutal! LOL Ferrari’s aren’t THAT bad and besides, having one or two around with a good driver on occasion keeps Porsche’s honest.

P.S. BTW, it was Harry RADY’S old car … but, close enough and I’ll never tell.

C'mon Cary,

Joe readily admits he has more fun racing the Porsche in POC than he did the F-car. and for him much more competitive for the Tribute. And now Gary followed. But to Ferrari's credit, some of the guys do drive their street F-cars to the track and put the real race car on the track.

"ALL IN FUN, Mr. E !! "
