Interesting...

so you're saying that with the exception of two drivers, this was a PCA vs. SCCA affair?
your explanation of having to declare driver eligibility (PCA/SCCA) makes perfect sense...

I'm trying to convince the POC drivers i know that run eligible 44's to run the Button Willow event with the 944 Cup series. POC vs. SCCA hmmm.
I'm not that familiar with PCA drivers out here but i'm sure they'll make this a very interesting weekend as well.

As a side note: i looked up past SCCA results from Willow Springs going back to '99. i could'nt find ONE ITS 944 listed. i did see that the winning ITS cars (RX7's) were running in the 1:38-
1:39 second range. if the so cal SCCA 944's cant put those kinda numbers on the board they're gonna be asses and elbows trying to keep some of our local boys behind them.

IE Rick White in his 924s runs 1:37's at willow springs. his car is purely legal and would be faster running at the reduced weight allowed by Cup944 rules...one tough customer.

More or less... those are the primary clubs in the area so the series was created to closely follow those rules and maximize paricipation by those drivers. I am unaware of any other big name club out this way that would have a decent number of drivers to contribute. There is actually some talk in the Cup's HQ to allow drivers to declare POC eligibility (with some tweaks of course) to makes things asier on the West Coast. You didn't hear that from me though.

Mein Gott im Himmel!

Guys, prize money would be a BAD idea. Very bad.

Bad bad bad.

I used to race karts at a local club and once a year we would have a money race. I refused to take part. I've seen normally sensible folks (approximately half the entrants) spend $500 to win $50. I'm serious. Prize money makes people stupid - especially in amateur racing.

First of all I think that's way wrong to call it an SCCA practice. Racers are always looking for an edge. Someone will build an engine to the extent of the rules.

Don't forget the hi-buck suspensions either. You can buy an IT or 944 Spec legal set of Koni dampers that cost $4k just for the dampers.

Let me claify my comment on high buck motors...

Again, speaking from my OWN experiences only, the
only guys that regularly spend "IT" kinda money on basicaly stock motors ARE IT guys.
In respect to "porsche people",who are known to spend upwards of $80k on a motor alone, with few exceptions, the reason a porsche racer drives a purely production based car (spec944) is because he does'nt have the budget to run anything else!

If he had the budget to spend monster money ona motor program, not to mention dumping $4k into shocks,he would'nt be dumping it into an NA 944.
he'd be running a full blown race car. most of us would run with the big boys if we had the budget.

soooo....that leaves what? SCCA drivers who are used to max effort development on cars such as these. POC/PCA dont typicaly subscribe to this.
it's not how their series developed...that'll never change in my opinion.
This does NOT make it wrong for the IT guys to follow this path.

Will there be POC/PCA drivers willing to spend this kinda money on a "spec" 944? almost certainly, but they will be the exception to the rule...trust me.

way off topic: since GEO appears to speak/write german...what is the german translation for BUCKET, as in a BUCKET of water? i just need to know...thanks!

According to my handy German/English dictionary....

As with many German words, it depends upon the context.

I see:

Eimer (masculine)

Kubel (umlaut on the "u" - I don't know how to reproduce the umlaut) (masculine)

Abkratzen (as in "kick the bucket") (feminine)

If you are looking for a racing seat it is called a rennschale or a schalensitz.

Guys:

Most interesting dialogue. Love the attention for 944 racing. Predicting the future of a race series is very difficult. The only certain thing you can predict is that they all come to an end.

What we hope while the 944 Cup lasts is that it provides 944 drivers a place to race these otherwise underpowered sports car, have a blast passing that 944 in front of them, and tellin' a bunch of lies when they get back into the paddock while killin' the kegs provided by NASA. If you get too serious about this series and become obssessed with winning, you have missed the point.

The 944 Cup is not billed as a cheap way to go racing, although racing any 944 compared to most other racing Porsches, i.e. 911's, it has one of the best fun to buck ratios you will find.

As for our prizes being a bad idea, whenever I can arrange to get one of our 944 racing brothers/sisters something for free or at at a discount, I'm doing it. We spend enough on overpriced parts from the big production boys as it is. And, if you spend the time to look at the prize matrix for the series, you'll see the prizes get passed throughout the entire field, from the winner to the guy who couldn't get his car started for the second race of the weekend.

When I talk to drivers coming from SCCA or PCA who are actually running in the series, they all like how close the racing is, they like the token prizes, and most they like the comraderie.

But don't take my word for it. Come out and get hooked up.

Dave, please look back and you will see that I said prize money. I stick to that. I've seen it make normally rational people do stupid things.

I am a "east coast" IT racer with a 944 but dont particularly enjoy watching BMW drivers blast past. SCCA has a long standing hatred of Porsche and their drivers, this will not change so I welcome 944 cup !!!!

Like FastFred, i too welcome this series.
Based upon PCA and POC races i've competed in where there were several 944 going head to head,
the racing is nothing short of thrilling!
The thought of entire field made up of these cars is like a dream.

I'm actually considering diverting funds from my GT3r 944 budget and scraping together a "spec" car.
I would seriously consider RENTING a car for the Oct. 13-14th Button Willow event if anyone is interested...

Finally...GEO: thanks for the translations...
i still have a question though.

EIMER -
KUBEL -
ABKRATZEN -

Which one? to simply say the word "bucket"?

Thanks again...

Eimer: bucket, pail
Kubel: tub; pail, bucket
Abkratzen (sein): kick the bucket

Best I can tell you.

Geo:

My clarification on prizes vs prize money was a follow up to your position on the statement made by an earlier poster saying that the Cup had prize money.
