Post torsion bar spring rate value.

I know this has been a topic previously, but with 23mm fronts and 33mm rear torsion bars what would be the calculated spring rate of these sizes? The reason I'm asking is I have just purchased coil overs (rsr) front and rear and would like to run coil over "helper" springs to add some additional suspension stiffness. The car weighs in at 2311# and 62 % of the weight is at the rear. Thanks for your help !

Calculated spring rates for torsion bars are as follows:
Front 23 mm - 250 lbs/in
Rear 33 mm - 427 lbs/ in

Howard:
Dr. Steve Timmins has a spring to t-bar conversion chart on his website. www.instant-g.com

Where did you get 33mm torsion bars? The biggest I could find two years ago were 31mm. I've got 23mm front and 31mm in the rear in my Carrera.

Carrera51,

Glen Sanders Engineering in Torrance has the 33's. I'm not sure if you can buy direct from them, you may have to go through a distributor such as Rennsport.

Thanks for the info !

Yes, you can buy direct from them. (310) 534-1210. Their website is http://www.sanderengineering.com/ Or others like Paragon Products are also dealers.

I see the 33mm torsion bars, and have to ask the question do these have a step up to that 33mm from the 31 splines? I have the 31mm and the bars and the splines are both 31mm. In Carroll Smith's book enginered to win on page 120 he specifically calls out a splined shaft where the splines are a smaller diameter than the shaft itself as "dumb", and calls the 31mm where there is no step at all as "almost as dumb". I understand the reason, the 33mm part will over stress the 31mm part and create an stress point where it will eventually fail.

inquiring minds want to know....

Jim
