Post Tire Trailer

Where does one find one of those little trailers that carry a set of tires, and how much do they cost?

Alan: There used to be a place in Florida (Southsport?) that built them, but I heard that they closed down. Some people buy the little trailer kits from various farm/trailer supply companies for a few hundred dollars and customize from the kit. Need a thick plywood floor, a properly designed and built tire rack, and a big storage box. Then there is the problem of designing and fitting a trailer bracket and hitch to your rear-engined car. That might take some cutting or hole boring behind your rear plate, and of course some welding. There was a very helpful post sometime back, with pictures and detailed instructions, but I can't remember which rennlist forum it was on. Use the search feature and see if you can find it. It's hard to tell what the final cost will be because it's customized and labor costs have varied widely. Much depends on how much of the work you do yourself. I've heard total costs from less than $500 to over $900.

Alan,

I got my trailer from Harbor Freight, with spare tire, delivered for around $250 (delivery was free). You want to get the trailer which uses the larger of the two tire sizes. Jim hit on how to prep it for use. Fortunately, you've got some flexibility with your '86 to design a hitch that utilizes the two bumper shock assemblies (unlike 964's, sigh....).

Other possible sources are <a href="http://www.armorrex.com/product.htm" target="_blank">Armor Rex Trailers</a> and <a href="http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&langId=-1&catalogId=4006970&PHOTOS=on&TEST=Y&productId=7262&categoryId=166839" target="_blank">Northern Tools</a>. I have not used any of these trailers so I can't recommend one over the other. If you search the archives I believe you will find some positive comments about the Armor Rex trailer though, I think that is where I found the link from originally.

Alan

Trailex makes a trailer with a 4x6 bed, the Tire Totter, which can carry at least eight wheels or four wheels and a BIG tool box, with room leftover. Like all Trailex stuff, it's aluminum and pricey at around $1000.
Regardless of which trailer you buy, get 12" wheels rather than the standard 8" and carry a spare.
Good luck

Alan,
Southsport is still around:

South Sport Trailers Inc
185 East Airport Boulevard
Sanford, FL 32773
407-330-2322

I have their DE Track trailer and like it very much. Light and the attached box is plenty large for all equipment (jacks, wrenches, etc).
They are around $800 + $200 shipping/freight. Carries 4 18" tires across the front.

Here is one from my PCA region's website (no affiliation with seller):
South Sport Track Trailer An excellent condition track tire and tool carrying trailer. Low miles, up grades, no hassle and easy to tow. Contact Doug McIninch (Bedford, NH) at 1-603-472-8877 or McIninch555@AOL.com (March 29, 2003)

Cool, Small World, I know Doug. I met him last year at Mosport and VIR. I was at NHIS this weekend, but bailed to cut the losses.

Thanks everyone for the leads/info.

Alan
