Default Guard vs. Quiafe

For all the racers here’s a question.

I’ve been running a 924s in 944 cup trim for the last 5 seasons. This season, I suffered extreme rear tire wear and burned up the inside rear at Beaver Run. This has led me to perform some diagnoses on my “supposed” LSD in the rear. (I bought the car used with an advertised Quaife, although I never saw it in the supporting maintenance receipts. Thus, I don’t know what’s in there.)

I’ve performed the tests with the following results:
1) out of gear, the rear tires turn together
2) in gear, they turn opposite
3) with one side jacked up, in gear and motor running, the suspended tire rotates under power (this test was performed carefully in very controlled environment)
4) ~100ft-lbs required to turn suspended wheel with other on ground (suspect with such a high torque, I turning the engine)

Questions:
1) Do I have a LSD? I assume no, or if so, it’s worn out
2) What’s better for pure road course conditions: LSD (Guard) or torque-balancing (Quaife)?
3) Which brand do people prefer based on experiences?

Thanks and let the opinions fly!

FYI, Guard makes both LSD and TBD (and even spools).

From your description, you do not have a clutch type LSD. You could have either a Quaife or open differential.

There is no easy answer to the "which is better" question. All differentials have their pluses and minuses.

Keep in mind the clutch style provides lockup under braking while the Quaife will not. Also you can vary the amount of lockup with a clutch depending on how it is setup. Call Guard and talk with them.

I agree w/ the above post that there is no absolute cut and dry answer.

Having said that I started spinning my inside rear tires this year and found out that the car actually had an open diff (not what I was told originally).

Anyway, after much research and talking to several guys including Mike & Paul at Gaurd Transmissions I got a LSD with a 50/80 lockup for the 944 S2.
It's being installed as we speak and I'm really looking forward to taking it down to Roebling Road in Feb for it's shake down.

Just my experience.

Thanks for the thoughts. We'll see what Guard has to say this week. The LSDs stability under braking seems like a big plus.
