<< I think you were seeing 125mph on the front straight? >>

hi!

i did my last session sunday between 10:40 and 11 am; was running deep into top gear (130 or so mph). couldn't go any faster cause couldn't get it to stop without sliding off into the sand at T1! man, what i would give for ABS in that car!!!!

in the rain, i was running slightly used Toyo 205-50-15s.

in the dry, i was seeing close to top end speed; about 138 to 140 mph without help; in the draft i got close to 145 a few times (thats a shade under 8k rpm in top gear). those 911/930/964/993/996s make a big hole in the wind for my civic to follow in!!!!

in the dry, i was running really used 225-45-15 RS05s from last year.

i was really having some fun playing with all the folks out there! let me say, though, that i really have to watch it when i am tailing the rear engined porsches; i overheated twice when following closely (there must be alot of damn heat pouring out of those motors!). after ducking out of the draft, the car cooled down almost immediately (20 to 30 secs or so). after that, i tried not to follow closely for more than 30 secs.....

Hey Todd!
It was great to see you it's been a long time... wanted to thank you again for getting in the car and cranking me up
I only wish I had gotten you in the car on friday--blew 4 years of cobwebs right out of my brain the track was perfect and I had a blast. If you speak to John, please mention that I could sure use some suspension on my beast I think the brakes are working good...

Please come out more often.... To the wood!

He was flying... What kind of suspension and engine mods does his car have?
That car is hooked up

Nice to meet you too. Dan's car is well sorted, but still pretty much a street car. He has a 3" Fabspeed exhaust and a matched Guru racing chip set and fuel regulator that bumps the power about 50 or so HP. We put full coil overs on with spring rates around 600 lbs/in and matched Bilstein shocks. Stiffer sway bars, Charlie Arms, and a little camber tweeking and it really goes. It helped too that I lent him a set of Hoosiers for the weekend.

Did you use the Bilstein Escort Cup coilover kit? Have you gone to a bigger oil cooler?

No, we used Eibach racing springs and Bilstein sport adjustable coilover struts. We haven't seen the need to go to a larger oil cooler as Dan installed a larger radiator last year and the engine temps stay perfect.

Thanks for the accolades old man, your next on my "kill" list, just need to make my car a little faster!!!

J/K

Anyway, in response to Beth (and thank you too for the compliment), I do indeed have the Escort Cup coilovers with Hypercoil springs. I think my Dad is confusing the setup on my old Jetta. The springs are 400lbs in the front and 550lbs in the back without torsion bars. The back has an effective ratio that you need to calculate because of the leverage from the banana arm, so the rear is probably around 310lbs. But this is at the lower range for the valving of these shocks, they take up to 800lb springs I think, so I'll most likely get stiffer springs in the future. As for the bigger oil cooler, no, never got one and nothing bad has happened yet.

Great event last weekend with Riesentoter Region.
cgomez,

thanks for not running over the MINI. We actually drove home Friday night after the 993 "quit", loaded the stock MINI and drove back and never missed a run. You did a great job and I'm glad you had a good time at our event. See you in '07

Carlitos,

You're making my car purchase more difficult. I've been in love with the Elise since the late 90s. Next year there will be quite a few ones on the high 20s.

It's amazing that a bone stock Elise with RA1 can keep up with a modified 964RS and a 993 SuperCup on the turns. Of course they were gaining on the straights, I can see that your 125 ft/lbs don't help you that much. It reminds me of my track days with the S2000 running against the Z06.

Great video. What run group was that? the pace was pretty good.

NJGT, speaking of which, i am thinking of stripping a s2k, stock motor but moton setup with cage and all for next year. did you like yours? reliable? we have pieces to fix the bump steer, so that no longer conerns me.

i am too cheap to rip up the porsches for a dedicated race car.

I wouldn't do it. Get an used Elise, put Ohlins, a cage, accusump, no stripping necessary.

The S2000 was my favorite car for a while (I had a 2002 and a 2005). It's a great driving school. After I drove the Elise, the S2000 moved down the list. Pretty much the Elise is a much stiffer chassis, 800 lbs lighter than the S2000, with the engine on the right place.

If you damage the Elise body at the track, you can get the front and rear shells from UK (manufactured in China) for cheap. The engine is the same Toyota Celica GT-S engine, very cheap, same goes to the tranny. The car is easy on the brakes.

I was at the track with my '05 S2000 and my friend driving an Elise. I thought I could keep up on straight line with him, but he was pulling away from me on the straights.

Brakes in the S2000 need a lot of work ($$$), the front end could be stiffer (not the springs/shocks, the body), the rollbar moves the seat forward, and it becomes uncomfortable.

That was our black run group. Carlito was doing a great job driving, but we kept hitting traffic which allowed him to close up a few times. It is a great handling car, and does well at Lime Rock and Summit, but doesn't have nearly enough power at the Glen or VIR.

Thanks Larry...

I run with the black group at NNJR-PCA, but the pace is not anywhere close to that on Carlos's video, it's slower.

I could see that your car without traffic could be lapping 2 secs faster based on the video. It's funny to watch the Slow-In-Fast-Out driving on your car while watching Fast-In-Slow-Out on the Elise.

NJ- Larry and Hoyt running the two cups would be running 22's-23's during practice for SP club race, so a DE is a hard place to judge lapping . I thought Carlitos did a great job with traffic and handling the car.
