my money is on a Carrera into the left front wheel when the previous owner was racing it. Apparently not an uncommon type of failure.
Bit scary the number of inspections that missed it - and that you could still get good alignment numbers and it still handled well.
They were/are custom valved Koni single adjustables built from OEM struts
