I still own that car! But, I'm not afraid to admit that I have a 944 as well. It really is an underappreciated platform.

(and a PITA to work on, AMHIK).

Get an all out ITS Jon Milledge motor in your car. Last I heard he was getting 185hp out of these things.

...you'll never get checked!

NASA dyno's every car eventually during the race season...At the Mid-Ohio Nationals I got dynoed twice!

What about LSD? This car has a non-limited slip transaxle...is that something I should worry about? I've never had a race car that wasn't LSDed.....

Yes, LSD is a must. When I stiffened my car and added coilovers I had a huge problem getting traction coming out of turns (and that was before I put the 3.0L engine in it!).

Don't let them go too nuts with the rear x bracing. I spent a lot of time talking to two different chassis engineers one of whom is very familiar with 944/951 before I built my cage and the consensus was anything going back beyond the rear suspension mounting points (such as the very common x brace going all the way back to the end of the chassis) was pointless from a chassis improvement standpoint and adds a lot of weight where you don't want it. Especially if you're using the 1.5"x.120 mild steel.

ball joints are a weak point in the stock a-arms...so either get the preferred aftermarket a-arms (Charley arms, Fabcar, or the new Racers edge arms) or keep a close eye on the stock ball joints.

LSD is not absolute MUST HAVE, but a very very very nice to have.

I have an open diff and would to get an LSD. I just don't have the $$$$, so I make do without. Still can challenge for race wins vs guys with LSD's so I am not losing THAT much.

Seriously what prep rules.

PCA? SCCA?

yup, even with soft suspension i can torque the car and spin the inside tire. Ir really irks me to have to drive around the open diff. I now have an LSD tranny with a shorted 5th gear sitting in my garage... another winter project.

if you can, have a shorter 5th ger put in it. Out here its all the rage, becuase down any long straight the long geared cars fall way behind.

The car will run in 944Cup and NASA GTS Challenge. I am still reading rules to see if I can "fit" the car into multiple series and still be competitive...

the cup is almost a 15:1 power/weight ratio, and the PCA rules allow just about any suspension you would want.

I think you can do it... although you may not be super competative though.

You may want to hang on a bit for the end of November. NASA national is going to annouce some things related to 944 spec and 944 racing in general. It is an attempt to gather the 944 racing fields. Not sure what it will be, but it is something to consider before racing a 944.

In Ohio 944 cup and 944 spec are not super strong. It is sort of middle ground. Lots of Cup cars at nationals due to the shorter tow, but 944 spec cars are being built around the country and in Canada. So it is a prep you should consider.

944 spec cars are legal in 944 cup with zero rules changes and should fit in to GTS1. Of course they are also PCA legal in SP1 as well. The major difference in built cost is a 944 spec car is not allowed rear coilovers and is limited to rather basic shocks. This greatly reduces costs on 100% build. Plust wheels & tire are limited thus putting all the cars are cheap stock wheels and cheap long lasting tires.

Of course a 2.7L engine is not allowed in 944 spec so your only option is 944 cup if you are building you 86 with a 2.7L
