Default How do you get corrosive brake dust off of a car's paint finish?

After coming back from this weekend's drenched Summit club race, I found that a good bit of my car had rust specks embedded in the paint. It feels rough and is very hard to get rid of. I run Hawk Blues and have used them in the rain before but have never seen the dust stick to the paint this way. I tried using a finesse paint cleaner, soap and water and Simple Green but nothing seems to work.

I also looked on autopia.org but came up with zilch.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Claybar works nicely for that. Just be sure to constantly switch sides, and pull and stretch the claybar so you are always using a clean section.

Rex,

Thank you. I'm not much of a concours guy but this was worrying me. It's a track car but I love the polar silver and wasn't too keen on light red.

I'll give it a whirl.

Hi Mark
Sounds like the race was a mess. What a pain to cleanup.
How did you finish?
I agree about the clay bar recommendation but be sure to read the directions carefully.

Hey Rick,

The first two days were miserable and cold. I did pretty well considering I was behind the wheel. I believe I qualified fastest in Friday's wet session and second fastest in Saturday's dry session (someone correct me if I moved myself up) but never got a chance to put in really good laps due to the damp track, traffic or black flags. Unfortunately, I broke a front sway bar mount in the middle of the Sunday sprint race, resulting in awful oversteer and the linkage end grinding into the hub. I watched the rest of the race from the access road to Turn 1. Not a happy camper was I.

I hope you've been well!

Things are good here; sorry to hear about your rust but real glad (and not surprised) to hear of your racing success.
I am back on the track next week (NHIS) but that may be it for the year; the remaining good events conflict with client travel (my priorities are somewhat suspect).
I will be checking out whether my trans really did have any damage or if it was just the wheel bearing noise; I hope for the latter.
