Yes, the 951 is easier to drive. The reason is there are so many "right" ways to get around a corner in it as compared to the 911 which requires skill and finess and a certain coaxing to get it rotated at higher speeds. Both cars are rewarding to drive well. When you hear guys saying the 944 platform is not as rewarding aren't driving it to its limit. It's easier to drive the 944 platform to 95% of its limit than the 911 which is slow unless you are rotating it. The 944 also slides easier and is much easier to control once it begins sliding. But to get the 944 to its limit requires skill and finese (but different technique) just like the 911.

Stick with the 951 for now. That is your least expensive option. All older cars can become maintainence nightmares but at least you know your particular 951 and if you traded for a SC, it would be a mystery.

I agree whole heartily about driving different platforms. That will make you a much better driver but you can wait. Learn to wring out everything that 951 has to give and then you will know what you want out of your next platform.

I've driven, like most of you, several different Porsches on the track.
What I liked most about the 944 (S2) is that it is a momentum car. If you want to go fast on the track you will have to become a better driver because you CAN'T make it up on the straights. That being said the car is one of the best cornering Porsches under 50K that you can buy (once you've upgraded it a little ;-))
As we all know the driver is the single most important component in turning out a fast lap. My strength while driving this car is under hard braking and cornering where I can usually outdrive almost anyone in a 911 (sorry).
Keep the 951 and when you get a chunk of change burning a hole in your pocket in a few years get a GT3, by then your driving skills will probably have improved to the point that you can take advantage of what the car has to offer.
At least that's my plan...

i loved my 951 it was a great car . great car on the track reliable and very quick car. but i feel like i have learned to be a better driver with the 911's i have had. i took a few steps backward at first but seat time helped.

i think the maintence coat are the same i would rather see you save for a 01 or 02 996 before buying an older sc. just my opinion.. i think it is a great car for the track

The better car to track is the 911, the 951 would be by your preference, just because you either have one or like them , but the 911 makes more sense as a track car , the newer the better ...

A. wayne, explain how a 911 makes more sense as a track car? in our championship i have been faster then nearly every car up until the 996 gt3, and even still i have beaten the average drivers who own gt3s.
the car has such great balance you can brake where you want almost. i can throw the 951 all over the ripple strips with out even getting a little out of control, i can brake in turns and not even get unsettled. i was even faster then a cayman S with pccb's on a tight circuit. i have driven both 911s and 944s on the curcuits around here and prefer the 951 because of its balance.

this is what i would say...

Both cars have pros & cons. The 951 is faster in stock form than a SC, but the SC is more durable. The turbo can be reliable, but you need to do some work to it. If you ever club race, the SC is the car to own in G. The 951 is just ok in E, where the 964s dominate. The 944 turbo cup is very fast in D, but still needs a good drive to win.

so really the question should be asked what car is best for which class you want to enter. our classes are done on power to weight over in australia and that seems to suit the 951 for C class, where as as 38d shows there are different classes in US.

i don't have the money race any porsche in any class other than stock, and even that is a stretch at this point. my racing will be done first in SCCA or NASA as the Eagle Talon I run is much cheaper to maintain.

To get a “stock” 951 to be a front runner in PCA you will spend almost as much as setting up a GT class car….sad but true.
