Default Why "weld" the torque tube on a 944?

This was done on my race car, but my local mechanic is not sure why. Can someone please tell me why one does this and what the benefits are? Also how it is done?

Thanks;

Don

I have been racing my 944 since 1990, it is only an 8v car, but I have never done anything to the torque tube, and it is still in good shape. This is after 225,000 street miles, and who knows how many races. I have filled up an SCCA logbook and about half filled up PCA logbood, plus PBOC and other orginazations races.

Never heard of doing it.

What does "welding the torque tube" mean? Welding it to the bellhousing?
