Default Any experience with tiptronic longevity for HPDE

I had one fail this year and am wondering if anybody else does tip for HPDE. The dealer reckons they wont hold up at the track. Car is a 99 996. How many events they have done with/without incident?

We have a few drivers that do HPDE in Triptronics - Boxster and 996 in our region and all do mutiple events per year and I have not seen any problems with them mechanically. Getting them to shift when you desire is another topic all together.

I had a trip go on my O2C2. I hadn't noticed a problem but the tech did when they were replacing a Cat under warranty. The Tip was under warranty, too!

Never missed a downshft, but I still think the Tip is "missing" a gear. Never used 1st at the track, and I couldn't get to 5th. So only 2, 3, and 4. Would have liked a closer ratio in the middle!

I've beed doing DE for 3 years with my '90 964 C2 Tip. I have had no problem with the reliability of the Tip through 30+ days.

As Brian noted, it has a mind of it's own when it wants to shift (I find that it's better to leave it in "D" and concentrate on my lines). It's loads of fun to feel it shift in the middle of the apex, but you get used to it!

One of my customers has done 20K of full-time track events on a '993 Tip and its perfect. With regular fluid changes, I think its pretty darned tough.

The 996 Tip's can be re-programmed to shift better,...

Has anyone detailed the best method of driving a 993 Tip on the track? I have driven both manual and auto modes and both have plusses and minuses. The worst of auto mode is the unwanted shift in the middle of the apex. The worst of the manual is the inablility to down shift when you need to.
Slow turns bug me especially. In manual mode, if I do not drop below 2600 rpm, I cannot down shift and I end up coming out of the turn in second, engine lugging. I wish I had one more gear. Has anyone ever replaced the final drive in a Tip?

Thanks
