Default Welcome new PCA SP1 racers!

As many of you know this year PCA adopted 944 spec rules as PCA Class SP1.

Looking through the PCA results it shows 5 new drivers in SP1 that were not involved in 944 spec before PCA adopted the class.

April 1,2....Road Atlanta,GA.......Brandon Sick
April 28,29 Lime Rock, CT..........Ricardo Diaz
May 13,14. Mid-Ohio,OH.............Larry Collins
June 17,18 Barber,AL................Jud Scott, Scott Watson

Welcome Brandon, Ricardo, Larry, Jud and Scott!

If you are on the Rennlist or know these folks I would love to get in contact with them so we can help them build the class!

Larry Collins is actually SP-2, he lurks around here I believe. He will likely be at the NASA nationals.

How about us Spect 2 racers?

Scott Watson is my good bud and is the President of the PCA ALabama Region. Both of us got into racing at the same time. Truth be known it was because of Scott that I began racing.

We both converted our PCA I class cars to Spec.

I chose to go to Spec because I am a big dude 270 pds and I liked the idea of the Spec series. I went to Spec 2 because I had camber plates and love running on my Hoosiers.

Running the first time in Spec was a blast.

I also happen to hold the Barber track record for Spec 2 (seeing how I was the only one)

Hey Rich

A big welcome to SP2! We're creating quite a dynasty as I hold the SP2 record at Watkins Glens. Of course I was also the only one in the class, but lets not quible over minor details.

I'm doing the 44Cup race at Hyperfest in July and its great that other than the usual race prep I don't have to fiddle with all the stuff I needed to run I Stock. Leaves more time to drink beer.

SP2 rules! Come on you I Stock racers, come join the fun. Less weight means less wear and tear on the car, brakes and tires. Less weight means a more fun to drive car. And who needs an interior to catch fire. There's 22 944 N/A running at HyperFest in 2 weeks.

Hey Chris,
Let's keep this going and sync up which tracks we will be at. We can dominate this class and create our own national run off

Anyway, I agree getting rid of all that stuff inside my car is better than going on a diet. This really is the way to go.

Come on PCA class I guys make the move to SPC.

Rich-

FYI camber plates are legal in SP1, but the Hoosiers aren't - only Toyo RA1 in 225/50/15.

Cory,
Thanks for the info. The rules PCA posted are a little confusing.

Rich welcome!

BTW... Spec 1 allows camber plates. Just not hoosiers. That is not so much for performace, but to limit costs. two sets of toyos will last through a 14-18 race season for most folks. Given the 225/50 R15 toyo run 128 each, they are a great value!

Rich if you have ANY questions about SP1 rules let me know. I am the Arizona Region NASA 944 spec series director and have been running my car in 944 spec since 2002. I know these rules inside and out plus have had a hand in shaping them. PCA took the NASA 944 spec rules line by line so they are a 100% match. Perfect for those of us looking to cross over!

Hi Joe,
Thanks for the help. Just so I am clear what are the differences between SP1 and SP2?
Iam planning to run at the NASA Road Atlanta event this August. This will be my first time running in the 44cup.
Thanks again,
Rich

SP1 = NASA 944 spec
This is a spec series for all 83-88 944 and 87, 88 924S (US version cars).
The intent is to have equal performance, low cost to build, low cost to maintain cars. Driver is intend to provide the difference.

SP2 = 944 cup
This series is intended to gather PCA I, H (and now SP1 too) cars together with SCCA ITS cars. Cars are allow to be prepped to their repsective class rules except for differences allowed in 944 cup rules. The difference are basicly weight. A PCA I car can weigth 2650lbs with driver, SCCA ITS is 2800lbs with dirver. A PCA car can remove interior bits to make weight.

Line by line difference in SP1 from SP2 gets ratther complex since there are 5 different prep levels in SP2. There is only 1 in SP1

So
weight SP1 = 2600 lbs with driver, SP2 2650 to 3000 depending in prep and engine size (2.7L cars allowed)

Suspension
SP1 = Rubber or plastic bushings, 30 mm max rear t-bars, no rear coil overs. Koni's yellows or bilstiens only. Front springs are 250 to 400lbs most commonly. Camber plates allowed.

SP2 = Spherical bushings allowed, any t-bar size allowed, PCA prep allows coil overs in rear, Fancy race shocks are allowed. Spring rates can be much higher than SP1. Camberplates allowed, but required added weigth in some prep levels.

Brakes
SP1 = Stock, but can replaced pads and rotors, but must remain stock size.
SP2 = with weight penalty big brakes are allowed. As far as I know most if not all don't run these however.

Driveline
SP1 = stock gears and Ring and Pinion. any LSD allowed, 88 and 924S Short 5th gear ratio allowed and needed for any 5th gear track.

SP2 = stock gears, some preps allow Alternate Ring & Pinion, any LSD, short 5th needed as well.

Wheels & Tire
SP1 = Phone dials or cookie cutters in 15x7" only. Spec tire is 225/50 R15 Toyo

SP2 = tire size and type free, wheels 15x7, 16x7 SCCA prep, PCA allows larger diameter and 8 to 9" wide wheels depending on prep.

Engine
SP1 = stock 2.5L only, Allowances, Free exhaust from the head, any chip, free intake to AFM, max compression 10.5:1 (Allows for some head shave and balance to 88 10.2:1). Intent is stock hp levels with no facny engine builds

SP2 = PCA prep stock, no chips SCCA ITS prep, stock internals, but SCCA IT rules expect peak of 183 bhp from the 8v 944 100% built motor. Not sure if anyone in 944 cup has one of these motors, but it would be legal if produced. Also 2.7L engines are allowed

I thnk that covers most of it.

Rich:

You'll have a blast at the 944 Cup race at Road Atlanta. Should have 12 to 15 944's racing there for that one. Super bunch of guys. Great opportunity to learn more about these cars too as they are a very knowledgable group. The Cup SE Director, John Mock, can help you with sponsor decals when you get to the track. You'll also need 4 NASA stickers which you can also get at the track.

To see what's happenin' in the SE, you can go to the web page at: http://southeast.44cup.com/index.html. You can learn more about registering for the race thru the NASA SE web page: http://www.nasa-southeast.com/roadrace.html . Online registration for RA is open: https://www.nasaproracing.com/nasa_e.../?event_id=384 .

Dave D.

ps. any specific questions on SP2/944 Cup be glad to help. You can post here or email me at cup944@aol.com. Joe is close on his SP2 points above, but not exact so don't take a gospel.
