Default Cool shirt and fire suit

How have you had your nomex suit modified to use your cool shirt?

I've been unhappy with the easy way (route it out the lower zipper) and was planning to have a tailor make a modification to route to tubes out in the natural place. This compromises the suits function and is a poor location to route the tubes.

I was thinking of a 6" long 1" diameter double walled nomex cylinder inserted into the waist seam to allow the tubes to transit from inside to outside. About 1" of nomex cylinder would show in the outside and the other 5" would be internal. I thought that this length would provide adequate protection in the even the suit was ever needed.

On my Momo suit it appears the waist seam is in the right place and I have both the nomex cloth and nomex thread to have it done, I just wondered what others have done before I take it to the tailor.

I cut a small hole in my left pocket (this is what most people I know do) and run the tubes out that way. I figured that the overlap of the pocket material since the cut is to the far inside would not be much of a breach. Less so that leaving the lower zipper open a bit for the tubes.

My water line feeds come in the left side of the drivers seat so that is why I used the left side pocket.

Tom,

I use the same exact set up as 4 Kurves. Works like a charm with no compromise on fire protection.

In fact, I feel safer when my body is cool and collected, as opposed to hot and sweaty!

Just the shirt is enough for me - even when it's 110 at Thuderhill or Buttonwillow.

I was looking to move the "hole" up from the pocket to a place that's further away from the lap belt and the constriction you get there when sitting (try putting your hand in your pocket while sitting versus looking at the room for movement you have 2-3 inches higher up).

I understand. I do have a problem with flow while sitting in the pits if I'm not careful when buckling in but as long I have the tubes sticking out and "above" the lap belt it goes ok.

The slit I made in my pocket is at the top of the pocket not at the bottom.

Not to hijack, but I've been debating on whether to go with a shirt or a new helmet with cooling. I think I'd prefer the helmet cooling, but I was wondering how much of a PITA it is with a Hans. Anyone have this configuration? Any comments?

RJay are you asking about water cooling for your helmet or cold air blown in?

Hubby runs the FAST system with helmet blower, HANS, radio, all in a RaceTech full wraparound seat. It's busy and kinda crowded in there, but the ability to run safely with a closed up tight face shield is very worthwhile. While it never feel "cold" - he sure as heck complains it the hose ever comes off. Highly recommended.

The cool helmet system (air running through ice chest to helmet) definitely helps and allows you to sit in the pits with your helmet on on hot days without overcooking. In my (fairly limited) experience, it is a welcome addition to the cooling arsenal, but if you had to choose one vs. the other, the cool shirt wins hands down over the helmet. Of course, I run both!

It is no problem with the Hans.

I was indeed referring to the air blower version.

Interesting... I had heard from others that if you had to go with one or the other that keeping the brain bucket cool was the better choice. Care to elaborate on the opposition view?
