Default GT3 Seats vs. Recaro Pole Postion

am considering adding a driving seat to my 996. I am considering either the Porsche GT3 seat or the slightly less expensive Recaro Pole Position. I will be "trying on" the Pole Position tomorrow at a supplier. Can anyone tell me if the GT3 seat is as wide as the Pole Position, or is as narrow as the SPG? I'd hate to order the GT3 sight unseen only to find that fat *** and waist are a tight fit.

Thanks,

My experience is the GT3 seats are noticeably narrower. I can squeeze in them but not well.

The PP's are a nice fit for me.

Thanks. It helps to know that the GT3 seats are narrower than the Pole Positions. I may opt for the Recaro Speed seat with 5 point harness mount capability. I'll know more after tomorrow when I sit in a few Recaros at the distributor.

Cheers,

Fred, At 5'10" and 200 lb. I fit in the GT3 seat. Having dropped 20 lb. they fit much better. I also used the Momo Acropolys (sp?) and liked it.

The GT3's might be a tough fit if you're a big guy. I've had other, larger drivers try my GT3's out; they went with Sparco EVO 2's. I'm just under six feet, 175 lbs, 32 inch waist (might be 33 next week) and my GT3's fit me perfectly with just enough room to be unrestrictive yet restrained.

consider the SPG XL....especially if you are tall. if you're going to track the car with race harnesses, the pole position & spg has belt openings that may be too low if you are tall. spg xl has larger belt openings that work better for tall guys when trying to mount harness belts at correct angles/position.

i'm 6'3", approx 225lbs

don't mean to hack, but i didnt want to start another seat thread

i'm looking at seats as well for the 996, but i'm a short skinny guy and i need a tiny seat that matches in addition, i sat in a friend's 996 with GT3 seats, and sitting down i felt like i was having trouble looking over the steering wheel. any way to change the height on GT3 seats, or does anyone know of a sseat that sits higher up than the GT3 seats in a 996? thanks

You can use a set of Recaro standard seat brackets to lift the seat (and set the tilt). They run about $95 for a pair. I have used them with some of my GT3 seat installs where the driver needed a little more height.

I installed the PP in my 928 last spring; I am still amazed how comfortable they are. At 6'1" 230lbs with a 38" waist they fit me like a glove.

Fred, where did you get those pictures on the Recaros? I want to see the dimensions for the Pro Racer SPG XL seats (the cup car ones but in the XL width). I am about the same size as Hacker-Pschorr.

Thanks Bob. I finally found the pdf file on Recaro's web site and the Pro Racer SPG XL is the same 430 mm across the base as the pole position. So if the PP seats fit Hacker ok, then this should fit me. Too bad they don't make the HANS style seat in the XL width.

Thanks to all who replied.

I'm 5' 8" and 200 lbs., 40 inch waist. At the rate I'm going, my casket will need to be round rather than rectangular. I tried out the SPG XL and the Speed 5-point at Northstar Motorsports. The SPG XL fit me perfectly and seemed as comfortable as my OEM sports seats. The Speed 5-point is narrower in the seat area. I found that I was sitting ON it rather than IN it. I'll be ordering the SPG XL for the driver's side, and let my passenger or instructor use the Speed 5-point. The Speed 5-point has moveable seat back that will still allow me access to the rear seat and cargo areas.

Cheers,
