Vinyl (not static cling) will definitely not fall off in wet weather. It sticks like mad until it gets dirty after a number of applications and removals. Last season I used mine for 5 or 6 events, wet and dry, and had no problems.

My mistake. I meant static cling.

Removable shelf liner is a cheap way to go too. Easy to get and easy to cut. Make a template of your # and cut a stack all at once with a sharp razorblade. Use once and discard.

Kurt,
What do you mean by "removable shelf liner"?? As in the stuff you put on cupboard shelves? Is this a Home Depot-like find? Thanks.

For a while I was actually cutting numbers out of contact paper, but that's a HUGE pita. Not worth the hassle.

Hi Kurt,
I tried shelf liner (contact paper) and it requires lots of compound and time to get the residue off the car.

I got a whole set of those numbers that used car dealers put on the cars. They are static cling for the windows. I'm going to test them out in a couple of weeks. Should be intresting to say the least.
