This says that you should not cross tie-downs. Interesting.
It does?

Well, upon second read, it doesn't, really. It is poorly written. It says that the best way is not to cross but to use straight pulls with the angles indicated in the drawing. Nonetheless, there is a cryptic note about how you should not cross unless both sides are crossed, or something like that.

Seems pretty straight forward to me...

crossing is OK as long as the straps are attached so they can't shift and saw against one another... duhhh:

"Criss-Crossing of the Tie-Downs should be used only when both ends of Tie-Down strap are securely locked in a fixed position to vehicle component and to trailer attachment point prohibiting Tie-Down movement."

I've hauled cars for 21 years on Big Rigs and now with a 944 on an open trailer. As long as the straps are tight and pulling in the opposite direction there is no need to cross anything. Even getting a little suspension compression is good as it will keep everything tight. Never hook to anything that has a bushing or attaches to the suspension. The torsion bar caps are fine as they will provide a little suspension compression. Always use factory points as they were designed for a reason.

Yes, but the diagram for optimal placement shows that the straps are not crossed.

Through the wheels, front and back...No crossing.

Interesting Todd. I wondering if being Nascar has anything to do with it? Are you still hitting VIR?

Most standard open and enclosed trailers do not have enough room or have D rings placed that would allow the straps to be angled out 20+ deg from the car. With many cars the straps path, if angling outward would be blocked by body parts. You might be able to do so in a transporter.

I have a full deck open trailer and use 4 of the Autometrics Motorsports' tow hooks. The rears are placed on the lower bolt of the rear shocks and the fronts are placed on the a-arm bolt. If the car is not too low and you use rachet type tie downs, it is a snap. If the car is low, you have to strech a little.
