Default How to tie down a 997??

Gang,

I hope this is not off topic, but I figured racers would know.

I just bought a 2005 997S and I need to go pick it up with my truck and trailer. How does one tie down a new 997???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What kind of trailer? I've always used the wheels and not the suspension. On the 997, check to see if there are rubber/plastic air shields in front of the front tires just under the front fenders. On the 996 and Boxster these small shields can easily be bent back and forth by loading and unloading the car..so you'll want to make sure this doesn't happen...Also, when you tie the car down make sure the straps don't interfer with these shields because if they do, they will tear.
Use your brake on the car once fully tied down and don't put it in gear for the ride on the trailer.

I bought tie down eyes for my 996 from autometrics (don't have the link. check p-car.com) that attached to the subframe. not sure there is anything out for the 997 yet though

Thanks, It's an 18ft. open trailer with large box and tire rack over the box. I use to race back in the day, and this was one of my old trailers. I had a 30ft. enclosed, but sold it when I got out of racing.

My vote is to tie down on the wheels, if your using something like a trailex make sure that your tire rack is set correctly. I had to adjust mine higher when I started trailering the GT3 on it.

The wheels always seem to be a common way to go, but shouldn't there be someplace to put hooks onto the frame? THese cars are all strapped down when they are shipped over here from Germany and those same tie down points must work. I think on my 964 they are right at the jack placement points.

Ditto what John H said on the Autometrics tie down hooks.

I prefer to tie the car down via these over using wheel straps; it tends to keep the suspension loaded rather than keeping the wheel loaded and allowing the car to 'bounce' around.

Another option is a lug nut tie down. Simply remove a lugnut and replace it with this.

IIRC, these are also advertised each month in the back of Pano in the For Sale section.....can't remember the person's name who sells them...Skip I think?

Thanks for all those who responded. Those tie down hooks sound great, but I won't have time or the tools to unbolt the shock and install them. Looks Like I'll have to go througth the wheels. Unreal you'd think Porsche would have tie down hooks on these cars. My old E30 M3 had em from the factory.

Found the lug nut tie downs I mentioned. January Pano, Classifieds, Page 103:
(usual disclaimers....no affiliation, yadaydada)....I'm just surprised I remembered

Lug Nut Tie Downs: These lug nut tie downs are a simple way to tie your Porsche down to your trailer without crawling under your car. Just screw on the lug nut tie down and attach your ratchet strap. lug nut tie downs are fine ... but when i trialered my 997 to the track car was fine with 30 " straps through the wheels... it kept the ratchets from hitting the paint. you can x cross the rear but not the front... brought it this way to alot of events

How does Porsche tie the car down when shipping overseas? On the 993, there are built in tie down points, anything like that on a 996/997?
