Hey Bob

Does the out put have to match exactly? The adapter that came with the camera says 8.4V is 12V going to fry it? The genius at the local Radio Shack seemed to think so.

Typically no, but be within 10% , but not less. ie: 9volt supply regulated should work fine. Internally the camcorder has voltage bridge that further regulates the line input. By exceeding this by a larger margin, the power supply will "clamp" the voltage to that required. If your input exceeds safe operating range, you pop a surface mount diode (pain to change). Stick 8.4 to 9volt and make sure the rated power allows the current required to run the camera. A quick search found this site:

They have a high quality filtered unit that will set you back 80 bucks(ask for the qty pricing as a sample R&D project), but the also have smaller units for less than half that.

I got a voltage-reducing converter like that from Radio Shack, I'm pretty sure. It's surprising that the genius didn't suggest one.

Fifteen bucks is a better deal than Radio Shack's, though.

Jack,
He was pretty clueless (like me only I don't pretend), I didn't have much luck in two trips there.

Bob,
Thanks again, I am guessing that the PST DC292 on the page that you linked to is gonna work so I ordered it. I will let you know how it turns out!

Well that didn't take long did it!

Yesterday I got a present in the mail. The unit is of very high quality. Came with 6 different plugs all of which can be used with either polarity.

The voltage is adjustable from 1.5V to 12V with 7 different settings along the way, so 9V is available for my 8.4V unit.
I haven't done a track test yet (saving that for 48hrs) but I have installed it in the car and it functions perfectly!

No mo battery worries for me thanks to my Rennlist brothers!!

Special thanks to Bob for his knowledge and willingness to share, that's what it's all about boys and girls!

Dan, good to hear. Check it with a running car and really rev the *&^*^* out of it. Play back and listen/watch for noise. If looks good, your in business.

I ordered one also. I'll be eternally greatful if I can cross bloody camera battery charging off my pre-race check list. Its always a major pain.

Nice link Bob! Many thanks.

Good point I haven't checked it at max revs yet!
