Question Tire wear?

I bought an '89 944 Turbo this summer and put some Yakohama AVS ES100s on it. Well, 11 track days and 5500 miles and I've hit the wear indicator on the front and almost there on the rears. I have never driven on the track this much before, is this normal were for street tires on the track?

There are a lot of variables that influence tire wear, but I'd say "yes".

11 track days is pretty good I would say, of course depending on how hard you drive...

I would also say that is very good. In the beginning, I could not get that kind of life out of street tires with my 993.

Yup, you're initial budget will include tires, pads, fluids. They typicall grind down on the outer edges, particularly the fronts. You can flip the tires on the rim and switch sides (tires still running the original direction, but now on opposite side of the car) to get a little more wear out of them.

I used to run through about 1.5-2 sets of street tires per DE season.

Thanks. I had a feeling it was probably normal considering the way they would squeal around most corners, but I was just a little shocked that the tires only lasted 4 months.

Get used to it-I use THREE sets (yes, 3 SETS) of NEW Hoosiers per PCA Race weekend, every race weekend. After the initial session, they are 1-2 seconds/lap SLOWER and become practice tires/DE tires only. The fastest lap ever on these tires is the 3rd or 4th hot lap from new-if the driver does it correctly. They progressively loose grip thereafter. Harder compounds-Michelin/Dunlop/Street tires will last longer-how quick do you want to be?

Gary, not to vary too far OT, but if Hoosiers lose that much time after the first heat cycle, would that drop them into the lap times of MPSCs? I ran on Hoosiers at a DE at Summit Point 3 weeks ago, at it definitely felt like the rears went off after 8 heat cycles. I was surprised, as I expected them to last longer.

The first time I read this I thought the last word was session. I was like holy crap.

Before switching to a second set of rims for victoracers I would get about 7-10 DEs out of them @ Sebring in the 951.

Larry,
The Hoosier DOT tire that I run is faster than any other tire that I've tried-Michelin, Dunlop, Pirelli, Toyo, Khumo-I love to see my competitors on the grid with any of these tires-they simply are not as fast as the Hoosiers.
If durability is the primary concern, then the ballgame changes, and another brand is more appropriate. There is a trade-off with all of these tires-longevity vs. grip-and the environment in which the tire is to be used will determine which is optimal.

I typically get 35+ heat cycles from my Toyo RA-1's. Assume 4 session per day is works out to about 9 track days. This is darn good for a "race tire" especially under hard racing conditions.

Interstingly they are fastest at the END of their life, just before they cycle out. Although I have tried I cannot seem to cord these tires unless I make a error like flat spotting, but I do wear them down way past the wear bars.

However they are NOT as fast as Hoosiers. The good thing for me is that they are spec tire for my racing class so I am not giving up any speed and only need two sets of tires for an entire season of racing.

With my Toyo RA-1's, I managed to get 18 track days and a handful of autocrosses on them before they started cording. And they got grippier as they wore down!

CO951: when size tires are you running on your 951? If you run the same size front and back (which helps dial out some of the understeer), you can increase your tire life. I run 245/45-16's at all four corners.
