Default anyone removed 944/968 sunroof for race car prep?

does anyone have experience regarding removal / elimination of factory 944 / 968 sunroof to improve head room and interior space for roll cage installation?

can i gain headroom and space or is it not worth the effort?

i removed the sunroof interior panel liner and installed manual latches, but i doubt that's what you're looking for. someone here on rennlist made manual permanent latches a long time ago, but i'm not sure who. maybe someone else will know the name

Joseph

I've also removed interior sunroof lining for a slight increase in headroom.

i'm thinking to get rid of the removable sunroof panel completely and somehow refinish / reseal roof like a non-sunroof car.

Mine is gutted and that helps with the headroom a bit. Per SCCA I had to bolt metal strips front to back. For next year I plan to epoxy the GT Racing piece to save some pounds way up high. The GT Racing piece is much lighter and can be bonded into the roof.

I have a thin sheet of aluminum thats drilled and bolted to the lip of the roof(inside the sunroof hole).

Works fine. You put spacers in there to make it level with the roof.

You can remove the entire component and replace with this with an insert.

Comes out looking pretty clean.

Not the topic here of "for sale" - and not going to change my web page just so I could show the pics of the sunrrof panel. Give it up.

I believe the 968 Firehawk cars had their's removed and a single piece welded in, painted, etc. The two I've seen look factory.

Easier/better to get racing seats and sit lower, IMHO.

but for those of us that are taller we still need the extra headroom. i'm 6 feet tall, with my sparcos basically bolted to the floor, but my helmet still barely scrapes the sunroof latches if i sit up straight.

Ahem - 6'2" race seats with adjustable rake of back, stock sunroof in place - I clear. Adjust your seat back rake a little - that should help.

Z-man,

I am 6'1" and I had tremendous clearance problems with my 944 as well, even with racing seats. My car is an SCCA ITS spec so it has the interior removed, manual latches and the metal strip bracing to hold everything in place.
