Aside from fire, 'closed pits' practice perhaps comes out of the potential for crew members to get run over. Or one car coming into a pit hitting another. But I guess crews could wear helmets.

For 1-hour enduros, I'm for lowering the time pit stops are disallowed at the beginning and always allowing pitstops during yellows (no refueling, so less danger). There were 15 less cars signed up this year for VIR, plus others out due to conditions, so the lane could have handled cars easily.
