Can I use a patched tire for an HPDE?

Well I have a set of Dunlop R compounds that I use for DEs on the stock wheels. I got a tiny nail in one and got it patched. They have been sitting in my garage ever since. Do you think it would be ok to use these at the track? I think so but when I ask some people say yes and others say no. Not sure....
Have you used a patched tire at the track? Should I just go with the 19" street tires? The street tires are Toyo SA-1s and they don't have as much grip.
What would you do?

The patched tire's integrity is compromised. If I were in your shoes, I'd save that tire for autocrossing, but not use it at a DE / HPDE on the big tracks.
There are already many inherent risks at the track. Increasing the chance of a flat or possible blowout is not something I would allow to be a factor out there.
Again, this is just my opinion.

I wouldn't, because in the total sceam of things, tires are cheap compared to the potential dissaster.
Have people done so without any problem? Yes.
The fact that you are asking the question says something in itself.....

I agree...for an autocross, sure. For drivers education, no way. The tire has been compromised...are you willing to gamble that when heated to track temperatures and tire stresses that the patch/plug holds? I wouldn't, and haven't, do that personally, and as a tech inspector, I'd tell you to get a new tire. Safety first on the track.

I would not risk it. Especially if it is one of the front tires. A tire went down on a friend's shared 996 cup car @ sebring and they had to extract the driver and heli him to Tampa General. Not worth the risk. He was on the front stretch and went directly into the retaining wall on the left side....

I agree that it is not a good idea not to use a plugged tire, I disagree with the front is worse than the rear. If I had to have a blowout, I would rather it be in the front than the rear, of course, I would rather not have one. In the front, I can strongarm it to go straight, with a blowout in the rear, I am just along for a wild ride.
