Default 944S2 vs 944 Turbo (S)

I'm in the process of moving to PCA E or F class depending on the car I find. What do ya'll think the general mainatance cost would be give equally prepared cars. I'm looking and NA 944S2's and turbos. I've been reviewing the PCA club race results and both seem to do well. Thanks for any input.

Thanks;

Don

PS. I would consider a 911 in either class but there don't seem to be many available.

Frankly, I think the 911 would be cheaper to run than either of them. Full prepped F cars are around if you look. Either a 3.2 or a Euro SC.

Don't overlook the 968... these are sleepers because of their rarity, but they seem awful fast from what I've seen

Any leads on 911 cars would be greatly appreciated... I missed out on a nice 968 from Florida.. I would also consider one...

Thanks again.

The 951S is an E car, the 944S2 is an F car. the normnal 951 is in F

Where will you be running mostly? The track has something to do with it.

At last weekend's Gingerman club race 9 out of the top 10 qualifiers were S2s. S2s do verywell on the shorter tracks.

Long tracks like Sebring and Road America let the turbos come into their own.

All race cars, 4 cyl or 6 cyl, NA or turbocharged, are expensive. eventually you'll have to rebuild the motor after enough hours, 6 cyl will cost more. Turbos make great power, but all that plumbing means there's more that can frustrate you over a weekend.

We have some of each in the turtle pond, and each has it's advantages and dis-advantages.

As to cost: Figure out what you think it'll cost you and double it. That's about right, but probably a little low.

Dang, I was hoping for a clearer answer :-) I want to move from my street 951S to a more track-oriented car, and figured the S2 would be less to run...

I don't think an S2 is much, if any, cheaper to run. Both cars weigh about the same so consumables (tires, brakes) will be about the same wear rates. Rebuilding the engines should be comparable as well. With relatively few exeptions/drivers, the 951 is faster on most every track and that itself may increase wear rates but speed is why we do this isn't it?.

You will have much more competition in F than in E. Last week Gingerman, E was the bottom of the 2nd race and was the top of the 3rd.

Personally, I like the speed of the 951 but am jealous of the competition of F. If I were to do it again, I'd say screw it and buy a cup car.

Jeff

Did you factor in the cost of all that safety wire for the plumbing?

I dont know, I think a S2 would be cheaper to run as there are less points of failure. You dont have to worry about BOV's, turbos, the crazy plumbing that goes with the S. Not to say S2's are not immune from problems but they are the same problems that effect any car driven hard. If full PCA CR trim, Jeff in the S is a 1.5-2.5 seconds faster around a shorter track (could be he is a better driver) but as was stated above, E is a small class in PCA right now. Gingerman had 17 F cars, Jeff in E had no one else in class to run with. A well prepped, well driven S2 is pretty damm close to a 951S on track (as long as the track does not have 3/4 miles straights!!!!

At several east coast tracks (Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, etc.), E is just as competitive as F.

I think the most E cars I have seen over the past few years was 14 at Mid Ohio last year. Usually 4 or 5 in class. F ALWAYS has a good number of cars competing.

At the Glen race in June, we had 26 E cars starting. On the east coast it seems the action is E & F.

The S2 is a very competitive car in F and should be less expensive to maintain compared to a turbo. The S2 seems to be faster than a regular turbo and on par with a 968 (the driver should be the difference there). There are a couple of guys running 968's that are really set-up and they have been on top alot this year.

Chris;

I had the pleasure of watching your car from behind a bunch at the Glen Clash (Crash) this year. I was driving a red 993 in D. Number 03. I think we mixed it up for a bunch of laps. Your car is beautiful!
