I have always been told to be direct with actions on the track but to always 'hint' at them in advance. So with steering and braking, a small hint and then a more direct action leads to a smooth action and one in which the car has a chance to setttle before the majority of the forces act on it.
Particularly in the wet, soft, hard, soft works better than hard, soft. YMMV.
