Default driver cooling systems

I have a Stand 21 helmet with a cooling port and was considering buying a helmet only cooling system.

Any comments or recommendations?

I have one for my open cockpit 914. It works ok, but I did not notice a big difference between using it and not using it. I'm sure it would make a bigger difference in a closed car though.

Bill,

I just had a FAST system installed in my car which I'll try for the first time next weekend (assuming all system are go!). I'll post after then to let you know how it works.

I'm assuming I can use the helmet separately from the cool shirt.

Beautiful car BTW. Give my regards to Ron (Zitza)

[edit] I thought I was replying to another topic it posted it here. I've deleted it.

But, to get on-topic, it's not that hard to make a helmet cooler. I've found a source for the same blower FAST uses. I was going to make my own but then thought there was too little price difference. Then I double checked. You (me, anybody) can make a helmet cooling set-up with ice chest for about what the FAST set-up costs for just the blower and hoses.

George,

Can you point me to the blower source?

Sure.

Here you go....

The most difficult item to find to make one of the cooler set-ups is the extruded aluminum heat sink tubing. I've yet to find them, but have been contemplating other options.

I bought a whole setup at a swap meet in Nashville, Tn last fall. Works fine, though it has not been hot enough to need it yet.

If you do build one make sure that you use the heat exchanger system, and not just trying to blow cold air through an ice chest. It would be unfortunate if someone tried the latter, and when he braked the ice and water shifted, filling the tube to the helmet, and drowned the driver in the process.

Enough kidding, just check at local stock car tracks. A lot of people have them at short tracks, and will sell them. I paid $80 for the whole set up.
