Default Fabcar shifter...

Anybody ever use the Fabcar shifter in their 930? Or 911? Any knowledge about it?

Being a little taller, I have my seat set pretty far back and find it hard to shift into 3rd sometimes at the track in certain situations. I saw the Fabcar shifter at the track in a students car and it look like it brought the shifter back and up, making it easier to reach/shift it looked like.

They aren't cheap, but then I'm killing third gear. It would be cheaper to buy this if it works than repair the tranny once a year.

Hey;

They are a brute. No slop in those babies! The Final Solution.

Anybody serious about trying to make a 911 shift at least as well as an old dump truck will spend the money for one, especially if they have an expensive custom gearbox.

No, most 911s DON'T shift as good as an old dump truck!

A930Rocket,

A friend of mine has one in his 930 and I have one in my GT2. We both love them. The only downside is that you must be extremely precise with your shifts since the gars are extremely close now. If not you can shift into the wrong gear.

So just take it easy and get used to it. They are fantastic. Top notch quality.

I'm tall too (too tall ) and have had the same issues with shifter location.
I had heard the same about the FABCAR shifter, tight short shift pattern and lacking the spring return feature between the 1/2 and 3/4 gates.
So I contacted Hayden at WEVO. The WEVO shifter has the double spring feature that alighns the shifter into the 3rd/4th slot. I have used the Siene Sytems shift kit on my stock shifter for the same feature. I happen to like being able to just pull the gear shift out of 2nd or 5th and know it will alighn itself with the correct gear be it 3rd or 4th.
Anyways Hayden happens to be have a custom tall mans shifter on his bench for me right now. Might be worth a call, save some bucks and get the double spring feature as well.
So he knows where you came from tell him Tall Mike in San Diego told you about it.

Thanks Norm And Ted.

Norm, do you or your buddy have any pics of the shifter in the car? What do you do about the handbrake and/or climate control? Ditch it?

Would a Carrera RS shifter (25mm higher and 10mm closer to the driver) help?
I would imagine the install would be a bit easier?

Jim,

My GT2 never had heat or climate control so I do not know. I believe my friends 930 does have both removed.

He is out of town so I cant yet get pics. Since mine is a GT2, my shifter looks quite a bit different than the 930 variation...

Right now I have an aftermarket short shifter and also bent the lever back and towards me to help out. The **** was swapped out for something a little taller to help out as well for reach. It wold be nice to be able to not have to stretch for third, especially in a few places where I have to shift and forces are pushing me to the back left.

This would be the last piece of the puzzle getting the seat, feet, arms, head, etc. in the right place.

Default Fabcar shifter

I have a Fabcar shifter in my 993RS clone. It is very precise although the gates are very close together. I purchased the car with the shifter already installed so I have no comparison to the stock 993. I missed a couple of 2nd to 3rd (hit 5th instead) when I first bought the car, but now I have no problems at all. It is very much like a bolt action rifle.
It is a bit tight to shift into reverse as the shifter hits up against my race seat, but otherwise no complaints.

I had the Fabcar unit in my prior car with a 915 trans. and now have the Wevo Unit. I prefer the Wevo unit. With a 5 speed trans, it was very difficult to cleanly hit 3rd every time ... too many times I would overshoot and hit 5th.... needless to say, this kills all the momentum.

Other than getting used to the shift pattern, it sounds like a good shifter.

With a 4 speed the missed shifts should be minimized I hope...

Tim, I looked an Rennshift site and it looks similar to what I have now, although
I'm sure it's modified greatly. From what I saw, the Fabcar is much further
back and upright.

I recently purchased a 914 that came with this shifter. I've never had so many issues shifting a car. Awful would be putting it mildly..... I'm going back to stock immediately!

I installed a Hargett shifter in my 911 this Summer and it's razor sharp ... much better than the sloppy OEM unit and it brings the shifter much closer to the driver.Only thing is it takes a bit of getting used to as you can't see it when you're strapped in with your helmet !

I would definitely recommend it !

Cheers
Phil
