Default Going from Boxter to 996

My friend decided to get rid of his Boxter-S after a GT-3 rolled at Homestead. He now has a 2002 996. My question is how much faster should he be? He is a very good driver.

Different car. Lots of different factors, like how was the Boxter set up,if at all, compared to the 996?
Is the 996 a C2 or C4?
One thing he'll like is the extra torque though
Also tell us y a rolled GT3 made him go to a 911?

Hello Mitch! I was at Homestead for the PBOC race and if you are referring to the Red Porsche that rolled during the race on Saturday, it was not a GT3. In fact, it was a 996 with a GT3 Cup rear spoiler. I know this because the driver, Marco is a good friend of mine and it happened 2 cars in front of me during the race. His car was set up by Orbit Racing and although it is still street legal, many panels have been replaced with lighter composites and the computer was also remapped. That car is REALLY "trick" and capable of turning laps times around the GT3 Cup cars.

As for the 996 versus the Boxster, Bill and John are exactly right. There are alot of different factors to consider. I have a very nicely set up 996 that is still street legal and that I have raced and autocrossed since 1999 and there are a few Boxsters our there that are prepared so well that I can not stay with them unless I make it a dedicated racer. Then again, there are well sorted Boxsters out there that I pass and check out on. Depends on the driver, the car and the track. Certain tracks are abetter for certain cars. Homestead is GREAT for Boxsters whereas Moroso and Sebring are better for 996s.

Rich, was that the #07? I was talking to him (not sure of his name) at Sebring because his car is the same number as mine, he seems to be a very nice guy. Is he OK?

The reason for the switch is the soft top. He wants the extra protection of the hard top.

His Boxter was essentially stock except for coil-over suspension. He is going to put coil-overs on the 996 C-2.
I'm sure he will be faster in the 996 once he gets used to it. Oh well.....

All Boxsters and 996s are already coil overs.... Do you mean he's changing the spring rates and shock valving?

996 and 986 do have shocks and coil springs as opposed to torsion bars. the coil over mentioned i think are referring to those type that can have ride ht adjusted.

Default no worries mate

I read with great interest that the "GT3" was not, in fact, a "GT3." Well, it doesn't really matter from your friends point--soft tops without improved roll over protection can be hazardous to one's health. The "coupe" withstood the test and the driver looked OK--that's the point.
As far as him performing with a 996 v 986--I guess you'll have to just wait and see. And by the way, is your car modified?

You'll just have to start modifying your car to get to the same horsepower and then hope that the race setup of your track car will keep you competitive with the 2002 996
The slippery slope just got a little bit steeper. Wonder if the third of the "three amigo's" will be upgrading too.

Wow, I've missed this thread for a while and look who's here!

Now you know my secret, I come here for all kinds of advice. Maybe we will have a little test and tune at Sebring Sunday! Jim's car should be ready for January's Moroso weekend. Now all we need is for Tommy to show up in a 997S!

BTW, I am running "stock"

jmorris3 - The rollover was caused by the driver coming off the back straight (Turn 10) a little too hot. Once the car started to lose it, he chose to fight it instead of driving straight off......Oops!

Mitch - I see you are signed up for the Instructor's Day at Moroso on January 8th?? Cool beans!! I will be there too. I wold love to put a face to the name. Please feel free to come over to my tent. It is white with the lettering "Bluemaxx Racing" on it. I will be driving my white 996 too. Hope to finally meet you.

Hey Rich, do these Boxster guys hang out here? If not can you get them here?

I'm in the process of getting my Boxster S setup and would like to pick their brains a bit.

Thanks!

Rich, it was great to meet you, the weather certainly was perfect and while Moroso isn't my favorite track, I did have fun.

As for the comparison between the 996 and the Boxter-S well, there is none. He now pulls me on every straight. Because of that, I'm sure that at Winterfest next week, which is at Sebring, he will be long gone by the end of the first "hot" lap. I guess a MAF kit for my car isn't off the list any more!!
