Default ADVAN slicks 280/650R18 vs 280/680R18

For a stock 996 C2, used in DE's, does it matter that much if I use the bigger overall diameter tire in the rear? Does it put more strain than usual on the clutch or dirvetrain? I don't think scrubbing the fenders is going to be an issue. Thank you. Repost from Tire/wheel forum but there's more viewer traffic here.

It will make you gears very tall, which will hurt your acceleration.

OK! Well, the whole reason for this post is because of this disclaimer: http://www.bobwoodmantires.com/yokohama/yokohama.html
What is interesting is that everyone running on Yoko's this weekend at the Club Race was using 280/650R18's on the rear! I figured if the Cup Cars cannot make the tires blow up, then it should be OK for a purely stock car.
