What is a reasonable price a dealer may charge for tech. ispection, like the one required by mid-ohio.

They should be able to complete the inspection in ~45 minutes, which includes putting the vehicle on a lift.

As around as many independent shops do these for free, thinking they will get your business if they find any problems that need to be corrected before the event.

Jeeva - In these parts it is a nominal 35 bucks unless you need parts in which case it is free if the garage provides them. It is not uncommon that some work needs doing, pads, rotors etc.

Jeeva,

If you can't do it yourself, take it to The Garaj. Most of the guys who live in Dayton with the OVRPCA use him or Ken Farler. Yuri will treat you right. He has worked on my P-Car and Audi in the past. I would avoid the Foreign Exchange.

It would take Yuri 30-60 minutes I'm sure.

Most, if not all, of my region's approved tech inspection sites, perform the tech inspection free of charge. In my case, I usually have the oil and brake fluid changed, so it's not free. But, if I didn't have anything done, there'd be no charge.

One half our of labor is what I have seen at independents. Dealers tend to charge an hour.

That seems awfully high to me. I believe Steinals here in Cleveland will do it for free, and the local dealer charges for 1/2 hr labor from what I remember.

Hey guys;

I am a tech inspecter for my region. I pretty much see the same faces, and expect them to have taken care of things as they should. I don't see it as my job to make their cars worthy. If it is a new person, I ask that they let me put the car up and really look it over to cover me and them from possible "embarassment."

I perform cursory inspections, and give advice regarding problems and/or upgrades, for free. If they would like me to actually put the car up in the air and lay a wrench on everything, do some fluids, pull wheels, etc, then I will charge them whatever time and materials I have involved in doing it.

You're all right. $150 is a lot!

You should check with your local region, too. Some use individuals, in addition to dealers and independants, as technical inspectors, and, AFAIK, at least around here, there's no charge for individual technical inspectors to do an inspection.

I have always done my own inspections. Is that not acceptable or are you not able to do so yourself?

Jeeva, careful with White-Allen, as many manufacturers have been denying warranty work if they know the car is tracked. Porsche included.

I don't remember about MORPCA, but many regions will not allow you to self-tech your car and require a professional mechanic or 'deputized' regional inspector to perform it.

My region's (Potomac/Founder's) tech inspection checklist is even more comprehensive than MORPCA's and basically requires the car to be put on a lift to check everything. It appears the MORPCA checklist could be performed on the ground in about 15 minutes.

As registrar for our region I get this same question from time to time. I always tell drivers to expect to pay for one hour of the shops time. If you do a lot of business with your shop, the owner might comp you a tech inspection here and there. But an hour of shop time is reasonable to get on a lift, get the wheels off, bleed the brakes, check the pads, inspect tires, etc.
When I get a driver - usually an inexperienced student - who "whines" about paying for a tech inspection I stress that I don't want to put a volunteer instructor into their car without a proper safety inspection.
