It reminds me of those Harley Davidson commercials. Peter Egan of Road & Track once had a great column about all the excuses available for putting off the decision to go racing. I've been a wannabe since high school, so I know the drill. CC, Nike slogan time ...... I now have my 1,000 laps, and she-who-must-be-obeyed has given me permission for next year. The budget for the roll cage, fire system, cut-off, suit, etc. is in place. I'd be interested in the statistics, but I don't think there's much difference between club racing and DE in terms of potential personal damage. Any actuaries on this thread?

Smokey, I hate to say it but you might be rightl. We may be in larger agreement than it appears.
OK, This made me laugh. 
I'm serious about the safety thing but I think I've put myself in a box. Which is more dangerous, a fully spec'd 944 racing, or a 600hp tt DE'ing? I do have another plan up my sleeve but I'll talk about that later.

Safer = race prepped 944!
Better learing tool = race prepped 944
Racing is more dangerious than DE since you passing corners and in general much close to other cars and taking risks. Nice thing about the 944 NA is that if you see 140 MPH on a track it because of broken speedo. So given that you have safer car since it has all the safety gear and you will be going slower then any incident in a 944 NA will is probably less risky. However in any racing eviroment you do have greater risk of an incident.

CC, with your training and talent, you should prepare a probabilistic safety analysis of a DE 600 hp tt versus a racing 944 NA with cage, nascar bars, cobra viper seat, electrical cut-off, suit, shoes, gloves, fire system, fuel cell, air system, cool shirt, and r-rated tires. Prepare a Power Point presentation and after a candle light dinner, present it to swmbo. Oh, and avoid the obvious trap: make it clear that the rules preclude installing all this in a DE car.
