This is a cross post for more help on this. I just bought a 70 911' that I got a set of 16"/7" standard Fuchs wheels with and there has yet to be much definative word on whether or not we can get a 225/50/16 DOT Race tire to fit in back or if we have to stick with a 205/50/16 all around. The car is getting stiffer and lower by 2" from stock. Here is what the car looks like with the 14"/5.5" stock wheels and tires. Thanks Guys!

I never tried 16" rims but a 225/50-15 on 7x15 rims tends to touch the inner fender and burn the paint. I used 205/50-15 front & rear with 6" and 7" rims with no problems. You also pick up a nice gearing improvment with the 205/50 in the back compared to the standard tire size (about 10% as I recall).

Joe,
If the wheels you are talking about are on the car in the picure, I don't think they are 7" wheels, they look like 6"ers. If the 7x17 Fuchs are not in the picture, then forget what I just said. Also, are you asking the wheel thing because you are going to DE or race. If you are then I would trade the 16"Fuchs for a set of 7x15" Fuchs or 7x15" cookie cutters. If you trade for cookie cutters you should get some money to "boot". Maybe even a little money to boot for the 15" Fuchs.
Anyway, I know that 225-45-15 Hoosier or Kuhmos will fit, with just a slight amount of rolling of the inner fender lip. You can also use 225-50-15's, and all brands sell that size.
If you are not going to DE or race, then forget all I said, I don't know that much about street tires.

Thanks Bill. The wheels on the car are 14"/5.5" with 185s all around. I have a set of 4 16"/7" fuchs that also came with the car (curently without tires). I plan on doing some DE and possibly a few vintage and other road race events. I was at an AX this weekend spying what was on the early 911s and they all had 205's but there did seem to be quite a bit of room to go bigger on all of them. Will I need to space the wheel out a bit? Thanks in advance.

What Chris says probably makes the most sense, because you would not have to trade wheels. The only problem I see, is that you are probably restricted to Hoosier. I think they are the only company that makes tires that size. They are relatively expensive, and there has been a discussion elswhere in Rennlist, as to their short life. Nothing is ever simple.

Hi,
I have had the same challenge on my narrowbody 911. I have a modified 3,2 engine and need all the grip I can get. For aesthetic reason I want to keep the car as is. Solution - take a pair of 7x15 Fuchs and have them widened by slightly less the one inch on the inside. Voila - 225x50/15 no longer a problem. Looks great from behind and even better - it works. The idea emerged from seeing the old 911R with 7 inch Fuchs wheels that looked exactly like the 6 inch wheels. If there was room for an extra inch inwards the same idea would have to work with 7 inch Fuchses -and it did.
