Default Race for Glory

Upcoming movie trailer - Race for Glory Audi vs Lancia. Can't decide if it looks good or cheesy but will probably watch it anyway. Certainly an iconic time in motorsports history. Daniel Bruhl isn't bad casting and they must have some budget on the table to get him.

That was the golden age of Gruppe B, the two at the top, Audi and Lancia. The budgets were incredible. Lancia's 037 Rally and the fearsome Delta S4 were spaceships.

There's some cheese in there for sure. But I can't wait. Looks cool.

Cesare Fiorio is a complicated, accomplished man. He built Lancia from the ground up and was a fierce competitor, winning several offshore boat racing titles himself.

Lancia was a powerhouse and won not only the WRC many, many times, but also the World Championship of Makes in 1980 and 1981 with two iterations of one of the most attractive Group 5 sports cars ever, the Lancia MonteCarlo Turbo.

Historical footage from the time. First Bettega, then Toivonen and Cresto's deaths were terrible, not to mention the spectators in the Rallye de Portugal. Tough time and a reckoning, sort of like after Ratzenberger and Senna's deaths were for F1.

Somewhere in my basement there are a bunch of DVDs with Group B video - names like Group B Killers and stuff like that.

I love period movies and I love car movies so I am a sucker for movies like this.

How did they get Niki Lauda in the movie?

Thanks for posting this memory. As a young kid in the 1970's, the Lancia Stratos is what first caught my eye and got me hooked on motorsports for the first time! This and the Targo Florio seemed so cool to a young kid such as myself where cars were literally on public streets and dirt roads going sideways with spectators just inches from them. To think about it now is insane, but as a kid, it was both dangerous and exciting!

Excellent piece which really captures of essence of the Targo Florio and yes, Helmet Marko was correct... it's totally insane. We visited Sicily in the summer of 2022 and I decided to take the rental car for a spin on the Piccolo circuit from the north coast up through the towns buries in the hills - wonderful switchbacks, blind corners, no room for errors, simply amazing what those drivers did back then. Thanks for sharing Peter, really enjoyed Vic's narration.

...and the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico. Only ran for 5 years due to all the carnage but Magioli won the last race in 1954 in this Ferrari 375. 1900+ miles in less than 18 hours, don't need to be a math major to figure that's an average of over 100mph on public roads

I'll go see it for sure. With all these racing movies, someone needs to make one about Porsche, Ferndinand Piech and the 917. That would be awesome!
