Default 996 Ice Racing Wheel and Tire Setup

I have a 1999 Carrera equipped with the factory LSD and I'm trying to figure out the ideal dedicated ice racing wheel/tire setup. Most of my previous experience is with Subaru's with studs up to 3.5mm protrusion but the 996 has me asking more questions.

My plan is 17" wheels (possibly 2 sets of fronts if I go square) and narrow tires. Does anyone here have experience with ice tire setup? I'm not sure if I should keep a staggered setup or go square. Could go 205's with moto/rally studs on all 4 corners. Ideally I'd go with a smaller wheel but I'm not wanting to change/grind my brakes to squeeze them on the car (custom wheels would be nice but time means that is a next season thing).

Link for laughs. The 265 winter tires are great on dry roads but hilariously bad on the lake.

Did you end up trying out an ice racing tire setup on your 996? Curious to learn what you chose and how it performed.

I've ran studless and extra-long studded tires on my old Subaru in the past at ice racing events in BC. Looking to pick out a pre-studded tire this time around for my 981 Cayman GTS with PTV...

981 OEM Sizes:
18in: 235/45ZR18 & 265/45ZR18
19in: 235/40ZR19 & 265/40ZR19
20in: 235/35ZR20 & 265/35ZR20

Leaning towards OEM width -20mm on a set of spare 18" OEM wheels:
215/50/18 & 245/50/18, which would stay close to the same diameter within 0.8%
