I have raced quite a few different of the spec classes in PCA (SPB, SPC, GTC1, GTC3 and GTD1). I think it depends on what your ultimate goal is. SPB will have the largest fields, but the slowest cars. And they break, more frequently than other race cars...at least mine did. It's also hardly cheap if you want to run at the pointy end. SPC is a great bang for the buck, but there are not many used cars for sale...yet. It's a growing class with a really good group of people. GTC3 (996 cup) is the absolute best bang for the buck speed wise, but the field will be small; maybe 1-2 other cars in your class. But you'll always still find someone to race with, it just might out of class. And the class records are often held by pro drivers, so you can compare yourself to some of the best (like Wolf Henzler at Sebring or Leh Keen at the Glen). The GT4 Clubsport is may favorite, but out of the price range.
Btw, huge class fields are very overrated in my view. I've run GTO in WRL with 40+ cars in class. It's no different really than your average PCA race where a typically class has 3-4 cars. You end up racing the people your same speed, whatever class they happen to be in.

I'm gonna commit blasphemy here (fire suit on) but I'm gonna throw out another position. Do you feel you have to own your own race car? I get it if you do - it's definitely cool to have your own, see it parked in your garage, etc. But I learned a few years ago that I think the most cost effective way to go racing: arrive-and-drive. And unless you explicitly want to race with PCA (because of fellow friends being competitors, etc.) I would skip that too. Go find a WRL team with seats open - a GP3 class Boxster is more or less a SPB if I understand it correctly, or perhaps even better. Or (IMO, a better option since you're new to racing, just coming out of HPDE) find a ChampCar team with seats open. (ChampCar has a LOT of Boxsters running now - Atlanta Speedwerks built and campaigns two cars in Champ - it's not all hoopties these days).
You can find WRL GP3 teams with seats for rent for around $5k a weekend (or less if you look hard enough), and closer to $3k if you look at ChampCar (or less if you look hard enough). You'll get WAY more seat time overall than you would at any PCA or SCCA sprint weekend (if you include the test day you can usually expect 4-6 hours of time behind the wheel), you're not stuck with a depreciating asset you have to pay to maintain (or try to sell when you want to get out, or upgrade), and so long as you don't crash it, you shouldn't have much in the way of additional surprise expenses. And often the more expensive seats in either of those series include a full dedicated crew, coaching (or at least a "data guy"), food, a place to hang your gear and rest, etc.

911Cup appears to be more of a cult than a PCA class. I don't feel safe.

In 911Cup the corner is always yours but you have to sometimes share it with the other corner owners while hanging for dear life. A block party of sorts.
