Track insurance.....who's got some input or ideas
OK....so I'm in my first Porsche as of last month but been doing many DE events for years as an instructor...PCA certified...but driving BMWs. Never bought track insurance before and never worried about it, but now thinking on it as I get acquainted with my new baby and all the inevitable quirks....and much higher value.
A few years ago a good number of regular Auto Policies still paid for track damage....my current provider used to but not anymore. Do any of you who do DE events only....not racing have a "regular" car policy that covers track damage??? Or perhaps ones that don't ask to take ALL of your insursance...all autos, home, boats, etc. Perhaps you could pass on some of the provisions if you do?
I'm just about to do the research on who provides additional track coverage....ie companies, coverages, rates, etc. I would appreciate any input you all could provide to give me a head start on who to contact, what to ask and what I should be thinking about.
Anyhow....chime in with your suggestions.

My "regular" insurance company will not cover anything on the track. I have used Lockton (https://locktonmotorsports.com/hpde-insurance/) since they seem a good bit cheaper than Hagerty. I can't say that I have read all the fine print but I feel much better than going without. it's not cheap though. Typically costs me about $250 a weekend.

I think its best to buy specific de insurance. My State farm agent told me technically they should cover me becase its not a race but warned that the underwriters would probably fight the claim.
look up On Track, open track, haggerty, lockton and a few others offer induvidual event and season policies.

+1 on track insurance... it's not just you making a mistake while getting acquainted with your ride (congrats btw!), but if you get collected as part of someone else's mistake or mishap, your policy keeps you whole.
I started with Lockton many years back, but have been with Open Track for the recent years, and likely to do their annual policy next season. There are others such as On Track, Hagerty... plenty of options.

Look specifically in the "contract" because that's where you need to examine the fine print ...... #1 definitions....for instance look for something like "competitive driving, improving your driving skills, racing, race tracks, etc" then drill down to.... #2 the sections that talk about "exclusions and/or limitations" where it will usually mention or reference the definition.....this is where you'll find out about all the things they won't pay for.
I'm going to update this thread in the next few days because I'm still researching this....I had couple of leads on this from two other instructors who know they have coverage or believe they do. From what I've learned so far it MAY be possible to find one but that company will likely want ALL your insurance needs.....that's big stretch for me at this point.
More later on this....mentioning the exact verbiage to look at. Showing you two examples.

So while I thought about going without but now think...probably not.
For those of you who have bought this type of coverage from various sources would you share how you approached this....ie do you state the value as what you have in it? Or what you paid? Or what you think you could sell it for today? Or what increment your willing to lose? So for me is it MSRP or the premium I had to pay this year to get mine....plus the extras.
I'd like to hear from you all who you used and liked best....and why.
More updates on this idea soon as I've had personal experience on this.....not recently fortunately. Fault the need to the learning process.

Would you mind sharing who holds your insurance policy....not the independent agency but the actual underwriting company....ie Geico, Progressive, USAA, etc. And what state you reside in.
The devil on this is in the details. You need to examine the actual contract that mentions all the things that are covered and what's not. You want to check liability section as well as collision section. Start off with the place where it may say.... #1Definitions....look for some thing that says..."competitive events, racing, improving your driving skills, race course or tracks, driving contest or challenge"....or any such....then read the further into the contract and examine the section entitled "exclusions and limitations" and under that section see if it references that definition. You'd want to see some verbiage that is broad and open to interpretation or even better doesn't say anything at all.
Two of my instructor friends assert that they have coverage with their regular policies, one of them has first hand experience the other one says he checks the contract on renewal.. I'm early in the process of checking this out but it seems likely that the company will want ALL your insurance needs. This would be a big stretch for me as I'm deep into my current relationship.
I'll update this thread in a couple of days after I learn more. Including some of the actual sentences/sections from the insurance contracts that I just mentioned. I have first hand experience on this topic....fortunately not recently but it's an interesting story non-the-less.
Hope this can help us find the appropriate level of risk we each are willing to take against the substantial cost involved either way.

I woke up this morning and my first thought was "we don't have enough threads about track insurance." Glad to see someone agreed.
On Track is owned by Steve who is a PCA racer and a decent guy when he isn't jumping the green flag at the start of the race. https://ontrackinsurance.com/
Despite his jumping the flag proclivities I insure my car with him for DE events.
Keep in mind that most street policies do not cover DE, and even if you insurance agent tells you they do, the agent doesn't have authority to bind the insurance company. Bottom line, track insurance is worth the money!

Thanks for the response.....I feel embarrassed. I did a search ahead of time and perhaps my search skills are either lame or I've been blinded by my recent purchase....lol
Luigi, what you said and who you mentioned is what I've heard but a couple of other Porsche guys.....I'm new to the darker side. So I'm in the research mode.....I had an incident a number of years ago and it was covered by my regular policy. As time went by these coverages dropped off....b/c of that I'd surmise. I'd say it's not so much about skill....although it can be, but bad luck in an unfortunate situation can trip any of us up.
My wallet could cover my recent BMW's from the risk but not so much for my first and likely last Porsche.

What he said ^^^ except the part of jumping the flag . (He was sleeping on the start)
In all seriousness we do have a program but there are other programs you can shop coverage and pricing with. In a selfish plug :We are the only program that writes coverage with a fully Admitted insurance company.
Do Not believe that any standard auto company has the intention of covering you during DE no matter what the broker says. Half of them really just don't have a clue of what DE is. Its just not the case . Has there been some anomaly possibly however it was probably a 1 off accommodation and now its a surcharge (accident) on there personal auto policy.
No matter who you choose insure with I am always happy to explain coverages or give totally unbiased advise . Even if you want me to take a look at the clauses on your own standard auto I am always happy to review the exclusions . Fell free to reach out any time 914 447 0423

Ill be shoping for a yearly policy this off season. I used on-track this season with their 10% on 3 or more individual events and was pleased to not need to file a claim. Steve was also able to raise my coverage mid season after the new motor when in.
If u r curious on cost just put your info into their calculators. Its real easy to compare.
