Default Muffler for 944

I need to buy a muffler for my race car and was wondering what everyone uses. I have used Borla mufflers in the past and while they work well the sound doesn't fit my ear.

I know that this is subjective but still want opionions. The muffler on the car is too much for me. I have no idea what it is except that it is loud.

Chris,
Eric Steinel put a 3.5" shorty Borla on the 951, and swears they consistently produce the best dyno results. The turbo likes just a little back pressure. May be a different story for the NA.

Had a B&B single in/out on the Carrera, which produced a great note - no resonance, no raspyness, but all business!

I run a stock muffler and no cat.

I know guy did a little dyno test and with a stock motor: a test pipe and stock muffer vs open exhaust just before the cat was no change in HP on the dyno.

Chris-
It's a dynomax 2.5" racing muffler. Not sure what it muffles- they claim it was good for 5 dB which got the car under noise limit.

Jim Pasha, writer for Excellence, agrees with M758, and he knows what he is talking about. Conversely, I have a Cherry Bomb steel pack, welded on, with the stock tip on the end of that, and I think it is cool sounding. But, I am probably not any faster, just louder. But on the 944S I am building, he told me to put a Mustang muffler on, not sure what type, as I am not that far along yet. I'll let you know. The 944 muffler is kinda heavy.

Speed Force Racing makes a great cat-back system that is all stainless. Its not cheap, but it looks and sounds awesome. Not sure about the dyno, though.

Ha Ha! I can just see that exhaust on my car!!! It would be the prettiest part of the car by far!!!

EDIT-- Except for the driver of course! -----

I'm with you Justin, it's LOUD!!! I have a hard enough time hearing as it is, I think if I keep that muffler it will deafen me for sure...........

I'm not sure what I will get but I have to try something else. I am building a new exhaust out of stainless. I had the header coated and it sure is white. Weight is a concern as I need to be 2250 with my big *** in the car (car needs to be 2025 ). I may just try a Supertrapp and tune it on the dyno.

Thanks for the replies, keep em comin.

Chris- I seem to remember the car weighed in at 2400 with me (~225) in it at before the race at VIR. I figure I jetisoned some unnecessary engine parts and about 10 quarts of oil for you in turn 2, you should be getting close to the target weight.

Justin

Get rid of the factory rear bumper, and some of that excess wiring, rear quarter glass, maybe the sunroof and I think you should be getting closer.
