Default South Boston vs Danville?

So far, I have 3 or 4 events planned at VIR this season coming up, the first being the Zone 2 3 day DE in about a month.

I've been to VIR 4 times and have always stayed in Danville because I always come down 81.

Wanna change it up this March and come down 95, obviously avoiding the big cities during rush hours, and South Boston is on that route.

Are there any pros and cons to either city that I should know about? I liked Danville, just want a change for this trip, and I'm solo, no wife no kids.

Are there decent hotels in South Boston and a couple of decent restaurants (not chain restaurants)? Anything in S Boston like the Golden Leaf Bistro in Danville?

Is there a grocery store like the Piggly Wiggly or "something" Lion?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks...

I feel it's 6 one, half a dozen the other regarding South Boston and Danville. You could also look into staying on premises at VIR if rooms are available, I did that in October and really liked it. I ate at the Oak Tree Tavern both nights...good food and cocktails and plenty of track guys to hang out with.

Thanks. I may stay at the track as well. Gonna give them a call to see what's available. Thanks...

Anyone doing the Zone 2 VIR gig and want to split a Villa lower. 2 separate rooms with beds. 1/2 kitchen. $245/night total. Anyone looking for a room at the track 3/14-3/17?
Villas are all that’s left for trackside lodging. Plenty of rooms in Danville and South Boston though, and cheap too. Guess it’s off season for southern Va. Anyone wants to split a villa, lemme know via pm.

True. I prefer to stay there these days but there are some good back roads into Milton. Fun in a Porsche, not so much in a 3/4 ton Suburban.

Stay at the track, you won't regret it.

On a side note, I'm starting to watch the forecast since the event hasn't filled up yet. If it looks promising I'm going to register just before the deadline. Here's hoping for a good forecast.

Weather has been nice the last couple Zone 2’s. Hoping for more of the same.
It’s Thunderbolt next weekend that is concerning me right now. Probably shoulda waited a bit longer before registering. Might need snow tires and chains for that event.

+1

The Charles Bass House gets good reviews. Bistro 1888 is definitely worth the drive no matter where you stay. Probably the best restaurant in the Danville-S. Boston area.

We normally stay in South Boston from a cost perspective. Danville seems to have newer hotels and much higher prices and I check every year for our team when we go and always wind up in South Boston.

Still haven't decided. If I'm not staying at the track, gonna try South Boston this trip as I'm gonna come down 95 and not 81, and haven't stayed in SB yet. Only Danville.

Thanks for the advice and info.
