Default Who knows the origin of the Checkered Flag?

Tried several search engines. Maybe a trivia buff would have the answer.

that is a great debate. I did hear something about it first being used for the vanderbult cup race in something like 1908. However nobody know for sure why checkered?

I thought maybe the skid marks of the tires crisscrossing across the start/finish line might have something to do with it. It doesn't really matter to me. I never see the damn flag anyway! Someone is always in front of me!

I've heard/read that a famous driver was color blind and couldn't distinguish the start from the finish flag. The checkered flag was created so that he would know to stop. I don't know how true this is, but it makes for a great story.
