My two cents, simply put...the 3.6 engine was BORN on synthetic, albeit Shell products - MOST people in the 3.6 community (the 964/993) use Mobil Synthetic, 15w-50 flavor.

With that said, Garibaldi is giving good sound advice for motors that are raced, and raced and raced. I would imagine that you will still do some street driving and the sort, as I do...so keep the multi-grade...after all, you do live in a "four seasons" climate!

Thanks, sometimes you have more information than can be digested. I was planning on using dino 10-40 and changing after each event. Ok then...

Sleder, FWIW, I use Mobil 15w-50, and it's so damned cheap at Walmart that I change it every other DE/Race weekend...I drive the car to work and run some errands in decent weather...so I imagine it gets less than 1000miles on it between drain intervals.

12qts of Mobil is ~$48, you use 10qts of it and the other two in case you leak/burn a little.

Makes more sense than I realized. I remembered Mobile 1 at about 5 or 6 per qt. but that was some time ago.

Something I believe you (and me, and all DE/track participants) should consider is installing an ACCUSUMP (or similar) oil accumulator system. These unit pressurize the oil sys to ensure that the oil is being circulated in all circumstances. Here is a PDF file that describes this unit in detail.

These units help with circulating oil on start up as well as when oil pressure suddenly drops. The whole unit runs under $200.

NOTE: I am not affiliated with or am paid to ensorse the above product. Actually, I don't have one installed in my car yet! But from what I've heard, it is a good piece of insurance to have on the track.

-Z-man, another proud user of Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic oil!

That is something to consider. I'll start with reading the PDF. Thank you! WHo do you go out and play with, NNJR only or...

Race or track motor, straight weight non-synthetic. Thats my vote. Nothing scientific other than I was parked in the paddock next to a race team (name too big to mention ;>) and noticed he was dumping straight 30 or 40 weight in his GT car. Brief conversation sold me.

For now, I'm sticking with NNJR DE events: I'm on the NNJR Track operations group (Track tech co-chair), and know the group I'm working with. I'd like to do other region's and club's DE's, but for now, NNJR has plenty to fill my schedule.

Do you play with NNJR? Are you going to Lime Rock, April 1-2? If so, make sure we chat in person!

At Rolex last year and this year I seen the red cap mobil 1 15w50 going into the 911 RS and Cup cars must work since they seem to use it every year and all Porsche teams I seen at the paddock are using it holds good pressure under load around around 4 bar at high RPM's on the 86 951.
