Certainly endurance racing has had limits for many years, primarily for reasons of safety.

Le Mans introduced time limits for drivers in 1950s - initially no more than 80 consecutive laps, and 18 hours in total (source).

Rules have evolved over time and the FIA, etc. have various regulations for the various race series.

Another set of factors that mandates driver rotations are commercial or entertainment related, such as pro/am series to ensure enough balance between the professionals and gentlemen drivers.

Which race were you watching where you heard about the limits?

Karl.

agree with Bamber

I would agree with maybe a 2 or 3 run stint limit. Just heard one guy in the lmp2 was doing 4 stints.

Part of endurance racing is strategy and determining the lap times between the drivers and how to stage them against the competition

Mandatory pit stops for the GT Pro cars ever 14 laps...WHY ?
The FIA screws everything up.

You might be referring to the incident with the Toyota LMP1 (#8 I think)
There was a maximum # of laps the LMP1 could do without pitting. I believe it was to balance out the Hybrids vs the Non-Hybrids -- not that it mattered.

If you read the article it explains in more detail. I know drivers have limits but the organization put mandatory stops in for the cars. Kind of bs to me

They were discussing this on Radio LeMans. The idea behind the 14 laps max between stops is to take away any advantage a team might have in fuel consumption. They were bemoaning that the emphasis is on the drivers on track, rather than car development/pit strategy. I don't like it, but hey. . .

I believe the announcers didn't like it either.

It is BS. It takes away an entire strategy element that can be very exciting for endurance race fans.
