Default OT-Why Are There Not More Covette's at DE's and On Track?

Off-topic. I have been attending HPDE events for many years and I am a member at a private track outside Chicago. Needless to say I spend time at the track (weather permitting here in Chicago). I have rarely seen Corvette's at HPDE event's and candidly I can think of only three members that track and race a Corvette. One is a C5, another is a C6 and the last is a C7. Most of the GT cars I see are Porsche (both 911 and Cayman), BMW's, and Miata's. Why are there not more Corvette's on track? They are certainly much more affordable and a great bang for the buck. Curious to eveyone's insight.

It is regional.
Last track event I was at I was driving one of three 911s (2 more boxsters), with probably 10+ Corvettes and another 10+ Camaros in attendance.

They tend to go into limp mode quite a bit... just a personal observation

I know the automatic C7 Z06 from 2015-2016 had cooling issues but I think GM resolved the cooling issue with the 2017 and newer cars. BTW, I think the manual trans cars were fine.

Still, strange I rarely see one on the track in the Midwest.

In the Southeast, C5/C6 and C7, especially the Z06 variant, are one of the more popular cars at Track Days and DE’s.

I think they’re one of the best cars with which to practice the craft, with well-driven ones routinely destroying more expensive, exotic machinery.

Lap time is often the only data that matters...

You are making assumptions based on your locale and experience. Broaden your horizons. Search is your friend. Check a corvette forum and search there as well.

Yep, we can ask here "why are there so many Corvettes at DE events?" But, I think we know the answer

The ones I've seen go into limp mode when on track were the C6 ZO6 and the C7 ZO6 auto

I started heading to the track about 12 years ago with PDA, which turned into NASA Northeast, and at the time every other car seemed to be a Corvette or a Mustang with a heavy dose of ricers mixed in. I believe NASA did (and still does) have an "American Iron" class or something like that. Vettes, Mustangs and Camaros. All the "gold chain" cars from Long Island and Jersey!

In texas, the second most popular car family next to the cayman/boxster seems to be a c5-c7 vette of some sort. As stated above, the only problem I'm aware of is the insufficient cooling system in the C7 Z06. I think the C7 gets a lot of bad rap because of this, but only the Z06 has a problem. Z06 owners I know were frustrated enough by the situation to jump ship and move to slower porsches.

I do many days with many different groups, both car-club and private, and I see tons of Corvettes (as well as Mustangs, but I digress). They are especially popular in Canada at Mosport and Ron Fellows keeps a fleet of them (along with Camaros and Cadillacs) there for his events.

From what I see and am told, the C5Z06 is still the absolute bang-for-buck winner when set up correctly for the track i.e. aux cooling for all fluids. If/when the motor goes rebuild it or throw a crate motor in for less than you'd think and you're good to go IIRC Danny Popp was doing 1:27-28s in his C5Z06 in NASA TT @ Mid-O a few years ago; they go like hell with a good driver.

As stated, CorvetteForum is the place.....

^^^^^^ Hi Gary

I sold my SC and bought a C6 Z06 in 2015. It's a lot of car for the price. I track mine a couple times a year when I instruct at PCA DE's at Mosport. Mine is pretty good, no overheating issues. One other instructor has a C6 Grand Sport.
A friend of mine has a C7 Z06 with paddle shift. He tracked in once at Mosport. After 2 laps it overheated and went into limp mode.

I will say this: my C7 Z51 manual has a dry sump motor, with an actual oil dipstick.

None of my friends with GT4's or 991GT3's have either...
