The Official 2018 F1 Thread
Race weekend in OZ. Reports are that the Renault power unit in the Red Bull has gained some ground. Estimates are that Ferrari has gained 10 bhp with reliability but is it enough to reel in the almighty Mercedes?
Winter testing results can be somewhat unpredictable and it definitely looks like Mercedes were sandbagging it as they often ran the medium compound tire while everyone else was running the super duper soft tire.
If we are to believe Daniel Ricciardo, the top 3 teams will be separated by .5 sec. with Mercedes on top and a coin flip between the Red Bulls and Ferrari. Hopefully the racing will be good and keep us engaged throughout the entire season.

Looks like Hamilton's season to lose. Over 1000 laps preseason and they even have a "party mode" for qualy, that's how smug it's going to be. Maybe Bottas will fight for the top step, maybe Ver and Ric will tangle this year, Kimi finds Vettel pace, if that happens then we'll see some great racing at the front.

Well despite it probably being another MB runaway train, I am stoked for the beginning of the season.
Agree the halos look like a$$.

we’ll have to see how their new engine package works out for them. The rumors during testing were that the McLaren chassis generated a lot of vibration which the power unit did not like. Whether that’s true or not we’ll soon find out if they lack reliability again this year

from Autosport today, while others are still working on “Please Don’t Blow Up Mode”
Mercedes plans to have its most powerful "party" mode qualifying setting yet in 2018, despite the need for Formula 1 engines to last longer.
F1 engine manufacturers have spent the winter focusing on improved reliability now that the number of power units each driver is allowed for the year has been reduced to three.
But Mercedes is adamant it wants to hit new power peaks rather than compromising performance for the new rules, with Lewis Hamilton suggesting he cannot wait to unleash Mercedes' qualifying maps - which he has nicknamed "party mode" - in Melbourne for the first time.

Meanwhile, it's my recollection that Torro Rosso had a relatively successful winter test.
Part of my really wishes F1 was more of a technology arms race but another part of me knows it's a lot more entertaining when the racing is more closely matched.
And unfortunately, when it's more about the car it just becomes a race to spend the most money.

Drifting
Apparently HAAS is going to have a good season ... seems like Grosjean might be in line for some podiums this year.
From what i recall , they will be getting the 2018 " factory " Ferrari powerplant !

Can't help but feel bad for Alonso.
