A Spec Miata (SM) is a great car to learn in and to race, because it communicates well and is forgiving. It is not just a “trainer” until you advance to a "real" car. However, it can become boring in advanced DE groups because it is a lower Hp, slower car. Thus, you will get passed a lot and some folk’s ego can't handle that; you know we all want to “Keep up with the Jones” and “Win the DE”. So unless there are other Miata there to play with or you are able to focus your practice, DEs can become boring. But, if you are going to race, you will not find better racing out there, not in PCA or even most pro races. Since it is a "spec" series, the cars are closely matched and the racing is tight. SM has large fields and attracts very good drivers and some who are less-good. Different regions vary, but on the East Coast you will find SM fields of 25-80 cars. You'll always have someone to race against. Now with the close racing, you also increase the opportunity for contact. That’s the downside, but contact can happen with any number of cars. SRF3 is probably the only other class that really comes close to matching SM numbers. It also provides close racing at a somewhat sane cost and should also be considered if racing is on your horizon.
