Default 991 GT3 Cup Car Instruction at Willow Springs

I just got my 991 Cup in June of this year. Never had a race car and very minimum track time. I have been a P Car enthusiast for twenty years. I just haven't had the time until now to enjoy, so enjoy I will.

I started tracking my Turbo S street car just this Summer and right away I longed for a dedicated track car. Cup car, I know crazy. Flash forward 4 track days in my street car this Summer and a POC event in the Cup at Laguna Seca earlier this month. After Laguna Seca, I went straight to dedicated instruction and a few private track days.

This is my third day of instruction in my Cup at Willow Springs. Boy, these cars are no joke! I am just getting familiar with the Cup. Thankfully my coach Dan Aspesi is great. My first day I did a 1:46, Second day a 1:41 and third day (this video) a 1:35 (well barely, but it counts).

Dan does a 1:25 in the video below mine, not pushing it.

We are on used tires in Summer desert temps of over 100 degrees. The car has a lot more in it.

Please be kind as I have never driven a race car, but am getting great progress.

By the way, my appologies to the TA run group at Laguna Seca. I was just learning the car. But watch out. All you spec boxters that were passing me, well I am growing up

This is me

My Coach Dan

Congrats! Sounds like Dan is helping a great deal, too.

Very cool.

I envy the budget and dedication you managed to find for this hobby - definitely a no compromise approach.

Power to you.

Peter, thanks.

Dan is helping a great deal. Coaching is the single biggest upgrade I have made.

Here is our data from Thursday. Data is a huge help. Especially understanding the braking. I am just starting to understand and the data is a great way for me to visualize the adjustments as I make them. Also great is to have same day, same car, pro (instructor) laps put down to compare with.

Thanks, It was a good bit of time in the making to get to do this.

You like that. Prior session was 3 seconds slower. We had just gone out for him to show me the line for 3,4,5 and had been talking about the brake pressures. I think he didn't realize that we couldn't high five with the net there.

Thanks. I agree, one of the reasons I went to a full race car was for the safety factor.

Thanks much Doc. It is unlike anything I have ever driven. When did the Cup car bug first bite you?

Default Making Progress, oh and a Blowout at 137 mph

Went back to Willow Springs yesterday September 2. Got some practice in with several POC members before our Auto Club event next weekend.

I have gotten 5 days at Willow Springs after Laguna Seca last month. I really wanted to get more comfortable and familar with the Cup.

Here are a couple of videos. First is of a blowout I had on my first session (right rear), going down the main straight at 137 mph. It felt like a big gust of wind was blowing the car around, then I saw in the rear view some smoke and it clicked that I had a blowout. Got the car slowed down and off the track.

Next Video is of me making progress, getting more used to the track and the car each day and session. Ran a PB of 1:33:70 with my instructor in the car. We have been getting a couple of seconds each day, just taking it easy and working on a couple of things each day.
