Default The Black Wheel Conundrum

I bought my CGT with about 1800 miles on it, and while the car was in perfect condition, the prior owner had the wheels powder coated black. Very nicely done, but not my cup of tea. I would like to return the car to factory appearance, and I'd appreciate some advice. What makes the most sense?

1. Find a good shop to strip the wheels and refinish them. The problem here is a) correct color and mica match and b) finding a shop that is competent to work with magnesium wheels

2. Buy a new set of wheels from Porsche and sell the black ones. New wheels would be about $25,000. Maybe I could get $20,000 for the black wheels, but I don't know.

3. Same as #2 but find a used set of wheels

4. Trade wheels with someone who likes black

Any thoughts, recommendations or other ideas would be appreciated. The other problem I'm dealing with is how to get the four wheels off the car at the same time and let the car sit while the wheels are in transit. I don't want to leave it at a dealer for a weeks while I wait....

I would strip them and refinish. Way to much money for new wheels.

I would wait until you need the engine out service, have the dealer send your wheels out and have them strip and refinish them.

That's what I ended up doing, but I wanted to change mine to black.

You might contact Wheel Enhancement in L.A.
They are well connected with all kinds of P car wheels, services + exchanges. Good customer service as well.

Try this fellow. Purchased new in the box OE wheels for one of my F-Cars. Great service.

I'm in the hunt for a CGT to park next to the FGT. Should you know of one with reasonable miles and with a good service history, would appreciate a heads up.

Thanks.

I'd favour the strip and refinish.

Whilst at it I'd take the opportunity to update the OE wheel colour:

Which I find a little bit 'low tech' for the beautifully organic spoke profile. I would see if I could find a shop that would be able to replicate the 997.2 GT3 deep sheen silver here:

This slightly deeper and more mercurial finish would show the lovely central spoke/hub detail and lifts the wheels a bit.

Here is what it could look like (dont know if this car has different coloured wheels, but its what I think the 997.2 GT3 paint would look like:

What do you think?

Pete
