Default Effects of high elevation on hp?

Hello all,

I'm a sea level dweller and am taking the CGT and the 993tt to Colorado later this month. Most of that time will be spent between 5000 and 10,000ft elevation.

What is the effect of that elevation on the hp of the cars? Is there some sort of formula like, "for every X feet of elevation, you lose Y hp? Thanks in advance.

Turbo cars are less effected as they partially create their own atmosphere via boost.

Also, I live up at 10,000 ft in Colorado and have had my car down at sea level also. The local track here is at about 6000ft. I can tell a huge difference between all three of these locations.

Hey Brian,

I've lived in both Utah (Park City) and Colorado (Keystone) for many years. The elevation will be very noticeable in your CGT, not so much on your TT.

Here is a link to a basic calculation...

http://www.slowgt.com/Calc2.htm#BasAltCal

Looks like Keystone (10K feet) will zap your CGT from 618 HP down to the equivalent of 419 HP...your TT can't be calculated the same way..expect minimal loss on the TT.

That's a huge drop! It will make that car feel "ordinary". The bright side is that maybe it won't have to fight so hard for traction in 1st and 2nd gear!

You used to live in Keystone? You should be going to Parade!

Let's get together soon.

Brian,

You coming out to MSR tomorrow for RUF's track day/concorso event, etc.?? I'm driving in it, if you come out, I'll see you there.

-Dan

I re-ran the calculation, you won't drop to 419HP in the CGT, it will be more like 431HP, don't go racing any Ruf R-turbo's up there...lol

I will be at the track but can't do the DE. I'll do some parade laps though. Yeehaw!

I came up with 431hp too. Either way, it's a huge loss of powaah! A friend with an R Turbo was supposed to go with us, but something about a 9 month pregnant wife is keeping him home.

See you tomorrow!

Dan,

I hope all went well at the DE and I'm sorry I couldn't make it. My twins had surgery 9 days ago and I thought they'd be in the clear by today, but they needed me here.

Let's get together soon.

Approximate power loss for a normally aspirated engine is 3% for every 1,000 feet above mean sea level.
