Back in summer 1986, Al Holbert tested a 928 S4 at Bonneville to record 172mph which made it the fastest production car of the day. The problem is that that car was a modified '86 with different cams, engine management computers, both mirrors removed, and lowered. Not at all a production 928 S4. Yet nobody seemed to care to do a follow up with a production car when they arrived in the USA.
The car from that test is now raced by a 928er in CA, and what the car really is has been documented. There are still other unknown engine mods done at the factory on that pre production S4.

I wouldn't be surprised if the quick CGT was running race tires, race fuel, and some other tweaks.
