Default Singer 4 Valve Air Cooled Engine

Has anyone seen a long term running test of Singer's new engine, i.e., is there any objective actual test of how that engine does in hot conditions running under load for substantial lengths of time (i.e., hours)? I have seen it run short distances for short periods of time in videos, but have not seen anything that one would call a longevity/durability test.

I would guess Cosworth engineered this one to be bullet proof considering the cost. Its not a project like the Valkyrie so theres that going for it in terms of longevity.

I assume you are correct but so far no evidence. Also, I had heard that Singer spent $50 million but this is only rumor.

In any event, it's an impressive effort.

What do you think about Singer using magnesium for the gearbox case and cylinder heads?

Magnesium for a gearbox is not uncommon.. I, however, would have done carbon fiber. As to magnesium for cylinder heads, I believe that Porsche once tried this for a version of 917 and it was not a great success. Indeed, I would be worried about the heat from an air cooled head.

Supposedly they received a bunch of funding from a single patron to develop the new car. The one with this engine.

As for engine testing, I don't know. I would imagine that Cosworth has their own internal standard for testing an engine that is being produced in X number of copies and destined for Y type of performance use. If I had to guess, it would have been tested to these Cosworth standards. Perhaps start by calling Cosworth? I don't know if they or Singer would be transparent about it.

Almost everything is conjecture at this point. No long term independent engine tests. Nothing as to standards. I assume the Singer 4 valve engine works but there are rumors of heat issues. No one seems to know the absolute truth.

I do, however, hope the engine works.

If our engine works, I'll provide the details. Until then, however, it is a work in progress.

Even if it fails miserably and ends up a molten puddle of aluminum and silicon carbide it will be interesting to read about!

Hope it's not molten metal but we will see.

the DLS engine is designed and made by Williams, not Cosworth

the magnesium gearbox is Hewland's

i visited the Williams/Singer facility and it is hard to convey the level of seriousness that has gone into this project .. my anticipation is feverish and confidence total.

the test cars have been out and about for some time now, most recently
